Everyone seems to be having a birthday sale. Warner Archive Collection was just having one over the past 5 weeks. And...

This is a shout-out to anyone here who lives in the Greater Boston area...

Newbury Comics is having an Anniversary Sale this weekend (in-store only): 25% off anything in the store. And that's 25% off whatever their sticker price says, not off SRP.

With respect to Criterions, they normally price them 25% below SRP, so a $40 title will be priced at $30. And if it's a new release, they have it marked down to $25. So the sale price will be 25% off that. I got Persona, The Freshman, and The Great Beauty for $18.74 a piece (a little over 50% off).

Sorry I didn't post this earlier, but I was AFK all day. But the sale will still be in effect Sunday. You should take note, however, that they typically have only one copy of a given title on the shelf. Unless they restock from the back room, you might not find a particular title if someone else got there first.

Awesome! lucky Boston folks! - heard great things about this store.

Recently bought Hidden Fortress from them via Amazon Marketplace (I believe it's the same company).

BTW - DeepDiscount has The Great Beauty, The Freshman for $21.99 / does anyone here buy Criterions from DD (Digipacks in particular) how's their usual packaging?... thx

I have seen good reviews about Mikhail Kalatozov's Letter Never Sent. I have a strong feeling that this is a movie version of a book called "Siberian Diamonds" by V Osipov that I read as a teenager and have recently re-acquired. The book itself was stragely fascinating. Is the film is on Criterion Blu-ray - worth getting?

Letter Never Sent is a great movie. It's almost a bare bones release so it's cheaper but the stunts alone in that movie are amazing, especially for the time.

Yes, it is based on a story by Osipov. It is definitely worth getting. The cinematography of Sergey Urusevsky is one of the greatest. The long takes are so fluid, the camera movement becomes a paint brush stroke. The story is good, but the cinematography is what shines in this film.

He also made another film with Milkhail Kalatozov called The Cranes are Flying. Again the cinematography is amazing. There is a scene where one of main characters run up 5 flights of stairs; the camera follows him, keeps him in focus. It is a beautiful shot.

In conclusion, if you are a fan of black and white cinematography, you should purchase this film. It is some of the best you will see.

When I find myself in this mode I cancel any open orders I have and re-order them when I know I have time to get to the film.

Thanks Fellini912 and everyone. I came home and checked the Osipov book ( which is really an "adventurelog" booklet. I have placed an order for the Criterion DVD via Amazon.

Cranes Are Flying is on my wanted list too.

I do like good Black & White cinematography and looking at the stills for these two films, Sergei Urusevsky's work looks fascinating. I recall reading that he sometimes used deep focus techniques like Gregg Toland.

I ordered 4-5 titles from them in January. It came in a small box and seemed a little loose, but the IAMMMMW digipack was unharmed. The rest were plastic cases and were also in perfect shape.

I'm a little out of the loop this weekend, since I was outdoors most of yesterday. On Friday evening, I revisited my Blu-rays of the first Iron Man movie and The Avengers. Last night, I rented Thor: The Dark World from a Redbox booth. This morning, I went to see Captain America: The Winter Soldier (and wrote a short review). This one is off the beaten path. Think of The Spy Who Came in from the Cold done by Marvel Comics, or something of the sort.

How does this relate to anything? Well, I'm feeling the need to revisit my Criterion Blu-ray of Walkabout tonight or later this week after seeing Jenny Agutter in action in this new Captain America flick.

As far as I know, it's the same outfit. I've only bought one thing from them from their Marketplace store: the Criterion Blu of Army of Shadows, for which I paid less than the original SRP despite it being OOP.

None of their stores are closer than about an hour from home, but if I'm near one for other reasons (as I was on Saturday) I make a point of checking out what they have on the shelf in the way of used discs. They're also the place I tend to take DVDs that I want to sell off.

It was funny yesterday, because I had about an hour to kill in the Manchester (NH) area, and was trying to decide whether to stop in at the Best Buy, Barnes & Noble, or Newbury Comics. I decided on NC without knowing about the sale, so I took it as a sign that God wanted me to have those Blu-rays (at least, that's what I told my wife.).

I'll bet that a couple of months ago, you never thought you'd ever be saying that.

One of the reasons why I was so jazzed for this film to get released. Just as The First Avenger had a superhero core thrust into the context of a WWII movie, this had a superhero core thrust into the context of a 60s/70s spy thriller. Hopefully this will prompt Paramount/Warner to release Three Days of the Condor on Blu-ray.

That scene was a bit of a shock. Once the reveal happens, you realize that it should've been obvious, but for a brief while it's WTF?

I never pre-order. I have a list with all the films I want to buy, plus a "maybe" list.

The CAD is so crap right now that it may actually be cheaper for me to buy from Amazon.ca. It may mean downgrading a few copies to DVD but I'll see when the B&N sale comes around.

I did not realize that this was out on Blu-ray. I just reserved a copy at the Barnes & Noble down the street.

EDIT: I just found out why I never realized that Three Days of the Condor was available on Blu-ray. It's listed on this site as "3 Days of the Condor", so I never found it in searches.

I find it crazy that Hulu offers so many Criterion titles, but Trouble in Paradise is not one of them. Building up a queue of films from Sight and Sounds Top 250 that I have yet to see and I was really surprised by this.

Hahahahaha...when I saw Antonmassacre1's reply, I thought to myself "Waitaminute...I specifically did a search here on this site to see if it was out, and didn't find even a non-US release. But when I clicked on his link to Amazon, I realized, like you, that I got caught up by the "3/Three" discrepancy.
