It's really hard for me to separate the often pretentious-like face value messages of Von Trier's films with the overall message of the films. In this instance, the idea that
[Show spoiler]sex with numerous men can save somehow save somebody's life.
However, what makes this film so remarkable is
[Show spoiler]how strong someone's love can be that they are willing to not only change their entire life, but also dedicate it to another. Bess's sacrifice is very similar to the martyrs of the past who are willing to die for what they believe in. The last shot of the bell ringing from what I presume to be heaven just proves how she suffered and is being rewarded accordingly.

Remarkable film and perhaps one of the best restorations from Criterion.

I hate the new move...I voiced my complaints in that thread, though, so thanks for the link.
That's why it's part of the older heart trilogy, Bess was just very naive and thought she was helping him, but it was just in her head and he happened to get better when she thought she did something. Although you can out that aside and see it as you saw, that her belief and love did help. It's closer to dancer in the dark than idiots.

It's a great film and so powerful, I'm not a fan of Emily Watson but she blew me away in this, she was perfect for the role.

I think Lars was right when he said it was a simple love story, cause it was, just with a hell of a lot of emotion in it! And those title cards were glorious.

It felt very similar to Dancer in the Dark, which I think I'm going to give another chance.

Emily Watson, as you said it best, was perfect for the role. She killed it, especially in her debut performance.

The song choices were great, too, as they related nicely to the themes of each chapter.

This thread is moving fast, so in case no one has posted this - Hitchcock's Downhill is available to rent through the Criterion on Amazon Instant and Lean's The Passionate Friends is now available for pre-order on the Criterion's iTunes channel.

It never has been. I think ultlife is confusing it with Nolan's remake.

The biggest surprise in the list for me was that M didn't finish higher.
M is a difficult film to re-watch for me, because of its brutal honesty and piteous tragedy. It's definitely not entertaining in my view as say, Dazed and Confused.

I haven't been able to bring myself to purchase that one yet. We got into the Criterion Collection a little over a year ago, when my son was born. Not sure how much I'll enjoy it...

On the other hand, I find myself revisiting M time and again, for precisely those reasons. It's a mesmerizing and potent viewing experience that hooks me again and again.

Though for what it's worth, I default to the German 80th Anniversary Edition BD, rather than the Criterion, these days. It's the definitive M release. Though I'm still holding on to my Criterion edition for the extras...and also because it was the first Criterion BD I ever bought. Ah, memories.

I have no regrets whatsoever about shelling out $80 for the "Used - Like New" Criterion Blu-ray of The Third Man a few months back. That Blu-ray is noticeably superior to the StudioCanal disc for several reasons, and a movie as visually spectacular as this one deserves the best treatment.

I had trouble finding this thread just now. I thought that they had (finally) kicked me out.

I'd be more inclined to think they're referring to Criterion's previous DVD.

As I said before, I didn't even notice that the thread had moved. I use the "User CP" link and refresh the list of threads I'm subscribed to, which tells me which ones have had new postings since the last time I looked at them. So the move was invisible to me.

Every now and then, I take a look at the master list of threads to look for new threads that I might be interested in.

I don't mind the move; it makes sense to me. I do mind them moving it without posting some kind of notice. That does not seem very user-friendly.

Possibly, however I would never refer to upgrading from DVD to blu as double dipping...

The site admin did try to start a new Crit Co thread a few years ago. People said don't do it so they didn't.
