Default James Cameron movie appreciation thread!

The Terminator
Aliens
The Abyss
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
True Lies
Titanic
Avatar

These are some of the highest grossing, most expensive, most technologically challenging, and most Oscar winning movies of all time.

James Cameron has produced some of the biggest spectacles to ever be seen on screen, yet he always grounds his work in real life plausible physics.

James Cameron is an artist, a scientist, an environmentalist out to save the world, an explorer who reached the bottom of the deepest Oceans and has yet to conquer a mission to Mars, a true inspiration, and one of the smartest living people.

Cameron used to know the secret to making a great movie. Make a movie feel real with relatable and interesting characters, letting the plot develop naturally and add-ons one or two spectacular elements.
Avatar is impressively made but it is far too reliant on the extraordinary and alien to tell the story. Too many fx

Still you gotta give him props for his films. Some of the best, most enjoyable and rewatchable films ever for me

I knew who created the thread before I clicked on it. Does that mean I spend too much time here?

Btw, I love Cameron's films.

The abyss is the best thing he's done. Can't wait for the blu-ray.

The brand new remaster done by Lowry/Lightstorm and supervised by Cameron has been screening on Cinemax HD. It looks absolutely fabulous. Every single optical effect has been perfectly restored. I've never seen this movie on the big screen so it was like watching it for the first time. My jaw was on the floor. Hopefully we'll get a Blu-ray announcement soon.

I love "The Terminator", "Terminator 2" and "Avatar".
Couldn't give a sh*t about anything else he's done.

And certainly, the accusations of his being "misogynist", just because he puts all his female characters on feministic pedestals as gun-toting and male-bashing (apart from Jamie Lee Curtis in True Lies) shouldn't detract from him as a director--Many great directors, like Woody Allen, Alfred Hitchcock and John Hughes were accused of being "neurotic misogynists", and that didn't stand in the way of their careers.
In fact, the whole gun-toting/male-bashing "fetish" isn't unusual for directors either: Most every director has his own psychological fetish, whether it's Quentin Tarantino's for bare feet, or Roger Corman for Daisy Duke shorts, or Wes Craven for obscene phone calls. In a way, it's the mark of an artist who's unafraid to be unique and make the story for his own tastes.

And even the fawning PC-agenda white-guilt tone he's taken in his later films shouldn't be considered a black mark, especially when you consider the Oscar-nominated tones of Robert Redford or Kevin Costner as directors. Certainly, the animators at Disney felt they were doing the native community a great service by making Pocahontas; Cameron likely felt he was doing similar good work on a grander scale.
And yet throughout his entire career, he hasn't been too distracted by his Hollywood work to lose focus on our ocean ecology. Even if years go by between films, Cameron will still be making us aware of our coral reefs.

It's hard to say. I like Predator, but maybe I'll slot Die Hard 2 just ahead of it for third place. Also like T3 alot. For those who were annoyed by little Eddie Furlong's performance in T2, T3 was nearly equal to T2 in slam-bang action entertainment, minus anyone younger than 17.

T3 was piss next to T2. Furlong was great in it too.

I think he's past his prime sadly, but Cameron has four films in my top 20 - Terminator, Aliens, T2 and True Lies - which is more than any other director.

Avatar was a load of shite though.

The Terminator
Aliens
The Abyss
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
True Lies

All among my favorite movies. Titanic is still watchable but I've really lost interest in Avatar.

As much as I do not care for Avatar, and think The Abyss and Titanic were just okay, he made three of the greatest action movies ever in Aliens and Terminator 1-2, so he's cool in my book.

I have enjoyed most of Cameron's films except for Titanic and Avatar. True Lies has to be my favourite followed by The Terminator, T2, Aliens and The Abyss.
