So, I just received a copy of The Man Who Fell To Earth Bluray in digipack form. Is there anyway that I can still get the plastic replacement case? For this, The Last Year At Marienbad and The Third Man?

Anybody who bothers to look.

I'm not a big fan of digipacks. The stock they use is too delicate. But some of them really are gorgeous. Inside and out.

Riot in Cell Block 11 arrived in the mail today, along with Sorcerer, Men in War, The Pawnbroker, and Get Carter (1971)

I'm going to wait until Saturday to give watch Riot in Cell Block 11, when I have plenty of time to immerse myself in the movie, and delve into the extras. I'm really excited, though. More Don Siegel for my collection is always wonderful.

Tonight, I'm going to kick back with Get Carter and see how it compares to my old snap-case DVD. Last night, I watched the new Blu-ray of Death Wish, starring Charles Bronson, and it put me in the right frame of mind for this original version of Get Carter. I love the early 1970s gunplay, with just the right touch of cool.

Criterion stopped selling the remaining OOP replacements last year, although The Third Man was gone some time before that.

The four titles still in print (Bottle Rocket, El Norte, Last Metro, Last Emperor) are available on their site.

Your best bet is contact them directly -- mulvaney@criterion.com -- with your info and willingness to pay the $5 per case, per title. No guarantees though.

Otherwise, you'll have to buy an empty case and print artwork from somewhere.

Two words: Charley Varrick

I would be thrilled if Universal ever dusted it off (even a half-assed effort by Uni would blow away the absolutely horrible DVD) and positively giddy if it ever got a spine number.

I'm right there with you.

Now that Criterion has got the ball rolling with a Don Siegel release, maybe Charley Varrick will see the light of day in the Collection at some point.

Come to think of it, I could also picture The Beguiled as a Criterion title someday.

Looks like I missed out. Thanks man. Is that what people are doing? Printing them out? Would the artwork even come out the same way? lol Ugh. Thanks for the response.

If you have a decent scan/copy of the artwork and a decent printer then it should be fine :P

And True Detective.

Both shows have an incredible amount of atmosphere that's an integral part of the show.

This show is just very unsettling and I can see how it haunts viewers to this day. I'm grateful Lynch was able to pull off this show despite impossible odds (I mean, this aired on the ABC network! crazy to imagine something like this today).
No spoilers, but you should be aware that the storyline will eventually start going off in different directions that many people found...lacking. I think the final batch of episodes (starting with the introduction of Windom Earle) is just about as strong as anything on the show, and I love how it wraps up.

Heh, "wraps up" may be overstating it a little.

But man, it is really hard to beat those first 10 or so episodes.

No, I don't think so. You just have to be able to handle an ending in which you aren't spoon-fed everything.

On the other hand, watching the prequel film does help.

I think my two favorite coming-of-age films in the Collection are The 400 Blows and My Life As a Dog. The latter doesn't get mentioned often here but I think it's great. I always feel better after seeing it. The boy is so resilient and no matter what life throws at him always muses that "It could have been worse......."

While I'm certainly not interested in arguing (especially with that tone), was the end of Season 2 even supposed to close out the story?

+1

It's sentimental as hell, but it never borders on the schlock that Hallström has pumped out since. So much of the film resonated with me. I remember one shot really getting to me..

[Show spoiler]

And of course that final shot of the two sleeping on the couch..

The film captures the life of a child in an unfamiliar setting well. I especially enjoy all of the eccentric characters spread about the town.

Ah, now I feel like watching it again. I'm such a sucker for a coming-of-age flick.
