Japan 47 Ronin in Japanese

After purchasing the US Blu Ray version of this film, and having had to listen to some very gifted actors stumble their way through this film in English I took a chance that the Japanese Blu Ray would in fact have them all speaking Japanese and it does, AND with English subtitles no less just so we non-Japanese speakers still know what they are saying.

Was I surprised to find six enclosed postcards (4x6) of the stars of the movie in gorgeous full color which was mentioned on the outside of the Region A pack if I had known what it said.

If you are looking for this film package it is GNXF-1474 which includes the Japanese version in 3D as well. It is selling now in Japan at 20% off list. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I am enjoying it.

Edit: CD Japan has just informed me that the "first press" set with the postcards has "sold out" and is no longer available.

Does that mean that Keanu Reeves is speaking in English to them and they are speaking Japanese back? I think they should have made the whole thing Japanese and made Keanu a mute or something, or left him out altogether.

Keanu Reeves speaks Japanese throughout the film. If you slow it down and watch his mouth he seems to be saying the Japanese words. In an interview Reeves said: ""I recorded every scene with Japanese dialog according to the wishes of the director."(Kotaku Japan)

The other thing I just noticed is that although the subtitles are at the bottom of the screen image ... they have stacked them in complete
sentences like I am doing here now
which is a first for me with English
subtitles. I find that it cuts into what-
ever is underlying the subs visually.
although whoever is speaking the subs
are under that person's image on the
screen.

Thanks for asking about Reeves. I still love this film in its Japanese language.

That's so awesome that Reeves did that. I guess the international versions are all butchered dubs then?

I really like what is said in the Japanese blu ray by all the characters. It makes sense to see Japanese of that era speaking Japanese, and since Reeves character grew up in Japan as a "half breed" it makes sense for him to speak Japanese also.

Still like THIS version of the film. Thanks again or asking about it.

Wait, so are there 2 different cuts of the film on the disc? The actors speaking English in one version and the actors speaking Japanese in another version?

Yes there are ... when you first put the disc in your player you have the choice of "everyone speaks Japanese" or "everyone speaks English". The same applies to the subtitles. Thanks for asking.

I'd heard that it was shot entirely in English and Japanese. This is very interesting.

Can you confirm that the Japanese track is lossless? CDJapan only lists DTS 5.1 for that track.

Many thanks.

So I guess that means you can't switch from Japanese to English audio via audio button since they are 2 different versions. Does the Japanese cut contain any different scenes?

Also, further checking the extras listed, seems the Japanese disc gets an extra featurette

Just tried a scene and if you hit the top menu button and scroll down to audio you can click back and forth between Japanese and English audio. Each time you click it takes approximately 3 seconds to switch, but I tried it several times with several different scenes and it works not that I see any real use for this. The content listed is USA edition 119 minutes ... Japan edition 127 minutes. I have NOT found extra scenes yet to justify that difference, but I am still looking.

As to featurettes ... sometimes they play for me, and sometimes they do not, and they are in Japanese with NO subs. Since they sometimes work and sometimes don't I have not checked to see exactly what each featurette contains.

Thanks for asking.

one more item ...

GNXF-1474 the first press set containing the six full color postcards although NO longer stocked by C.D.Japan I have found Amazon JP has
it so if you want these amazing postcards hunt around various Japanese dealers and I am sure you will find the "first press set with postcards" still for sale.

Good luck!

The truly frustrating thing about this disc is the lack of any information. If you hit "audio" under soundtrack (your only choice) the Japanese cut says "DTS Multi" and the English cut says "DTS-HD Master Multi" but that is it.

Hope that helps!

Does the Japanese blu-ray 3D have English subtitles? How do the subtitles feel in 3D? Are they properly done or eye-straining?

The 3D version of the film is exactly like the non-3D version, but ALL 3D to me bothers my eyes so I am not the one to ask about this that is for sure.

Sorry!

Are you sure there is a Japanese filmed version on this? All I can see is them speaking English dubbed over in Japanese. I tried both version from the language selection before the main menu too.

huh? is this 5.1 or 7.1 (which thought the DCP was encoded at, but I could be wrong)?

My player simply lists what I noted above.

"Are you sure there is a Japanese filmed version on this? All I can see is them speaking English dubbed over in Japanese. I tried both version from the language selection before the main menu too."

As to them dubbed in Japanese I will have to check that out as it sure looks like Japanese to me. My main problem with the English version was how forced that English was and how much you had to concentrate on "what are they really saying or trying to say" and with the Japanese version and English subtitles it really flows much better.

Thanks.
