Actually, I have just got it set to auto.

I haven't had a chance to sit down and dial it in yet. I need to take the time and do it....

Cakefoo . . .

You mentioned your shots are on a 24" Sony FW900 CRT monitor. Are you saying that you took photographs of the monitor? Or did you just computer capture the images? I'm a little confused here.

Yeah, looks better than the first one IMO. There are some great landscape scenes as well. My camera kept wanting to bleach out the light colored rock, so I left them out.

Hey ric. I took photographs off the monitor. I lowered the contrast and tweaked color sliders on the monitor until I got something that looked like what my eye was seeing. Having the ability to store multiple custom presets, I can store that calibration for quick switching between watching the movie and taking a photo of the screen.

Here's an offscreen pic I took of Ratatouille recently

Here's a direct capture from a movie website:

And here's one I took of Ratatouille several months ago, before I discovered that I could get good pics by adjusting my monitor's levels:

Now, some people who just got a brand new kick-ass camera (JasonR ) apparently don't need to tone down their contrast to take balanced pics. For the rest of us... well... we have our workarounds

Thanks for the explanation, Cakefoo. I'm kind-of surprised you're able to take pictures of the monitor like that. I, too, am limited by my camera. I have a rather cheap one. But it's only a year old and I'm certainly not going to spend $1000 on a good camera just so I can take better screenshots.

Ric,

Did your Mt. Rushmore shots bleach out too? They looked great on screen, I couldn't keep any to post though...

Jason
I had this one of Rushmore. Not the best.

I tried playing a little with the exposure on my camera. I'm still trying to get that right. I am not pleased with the shadow detail. If I up the exposure to get better shadow detail then the whites tend to bloom. If I lower the exposure, everything in the shadows go black. I would estimate that my screenshots depict about 80-90% accuracy on what I'm actually seeing on screen. I'm just not able to get closer than that with my current camera. I'm no photographer, however. I'm not sure how to dial in aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. I also have adjustments for contrast, sharpness, saturation and noise reduction. I'm still trying to figure out the best combination of all of those things.

That's why I lower the contrast on my monitor for offscreen photos.
