Under the Skin is my favorite film of 2014 so far, and it's the best science fiction movie that I've seen in recent memory. The movie really does look as though it were not filmed by humans.
I've seen it twice in the theater now, and it was even better the second time. I'm all over this Blu-ray. |

Does not live up to the hype. Starts off well, then gets repetitive and slow and confusing. I guess the book explains more about what's going on. It was OK, IMO. Nice to see Scarlett not only naked but trying something different. I guess the fact that there were only 5 of us (all male) in the theater tells you something.

Mica Levi's music score for Under the Skin is pretty amazing. Director Jonathan Glazer's past experience with music videos is a definite asset, and it's fun to see the music and visuals play off of one another. I love watching this film for the same reason that I love watching the end credits of Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver, in that the interplay of music and visuals is mesmerizing.
Under the Skin draws a lot of comparisons to the works of Stanley Kubrick and Andrei Tarkovsky, and those influences are apparent, but I was personally reminded even more of Philip Kaufman's brilliant 1978 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, because both movies are blessed with unhurried pacing and uncanny camera perspectives. I read the Michel Faber novel a month before seeing this film, and I prefer the film, because it eschews Faber's heavy-handed didactic narrative for something more hauntingly ethereal. Last week, I ordered and watched Glazer's Sexy Beast at long last, because I wanted to see some earlier work by the director. I loved that film, although Under the Skin is still my favorite of the two. I never gave much thought to Birth when it was released a decade ago, but I'd really like to see it now. What I really love about Under the Skin is that it does not take any wrong steps, and it never drops the ball. So many movies have a promising premise at the beginning, but falter and wither away in the final half. Under the Skin starts off strong, and it just keeps getting better. ![]() Is there any chance of that becoming a store exclusive here in the states. I could kinda see Target having that as an exclusive. |
