the intercoolers i've heard about sound good but they void the manufacturer's warranty. so if anything goes wrong with the ps3 and you send it in sony will see the marks left where the intercooler clips on and blame any malfunction on that. so I bought a laptop coolpad that runs off usb power and have my ps3 on top. I know it doesn't cool the entire machine but the bottom of the ps3 never gets above room temperature.

apparently they have a tendency to brick consoles. Many a 360 has been bricked. It artificially changes the a flow that the system needs to function properly.
The ps3 system fan is adequate to do the job. It is larger than a cd in size. I have heard that it says in the manual that it does void the warranty, but have not confirmed it. I too was interested, but did some research and decided against it. As long as it has adequate ventilation it will be fine. |

I used a Nyko intercooler without problems for almost a year with my 360 and it did make a difference. I've never really felt the need to get anything for my PS3 since it doesn't seem to have the overheating issues the 360 does, or at least far from the same degree.

Why should it void the warranty? Well, some of these "cooling devices" try to push cool air into the unit. The problem is they force air into the area where the PS3 fan is trying to push air out, thereby compromising the ability of the PS3 to cool down. Also, any plastic device that sits directly against the PS3, touching it, will not allow air to reach certain parts that can become very hot. I have heard that some intercoolers actually melt onto the device they are trying to cool. That can't be good and is certainly not what the manufacturer intended. Lastly, any vibration from such a device is not ideal. I go to some lengths to isolate my gear and try to minimize groundborne and airborne vibrations. I'm not obsessive about this, but I do what I can. Having an intercooler set up with the PS3 would certainly not help. It's bad enough there needs to be an internal fan in the PS3. Attaching external fans just seems silly. |
