I wonder how shocking it will be today for first time viewers, with all the many things that have come out in film since then.

I personally reccomend it, but don't hype it up too much as a good movie. Hype it up as a shocking movie
This is a good point. I do think that my expectations were very high when I first viewed CH. I own GR's original DVD release, and I've only revisited the film a few times. I'm never impressed, but I have an odd respect for the film.

Good point. I was born in '94 so I saw a lot of the torture porn glut of the 2000s. But I've also seen older movies that have disturbed me more than the stuff that comes out today, and not always in terms of violence. I will certainly post my thoughts when I view this for the first time. I almost broke down and bought the DVD last August, so glad I held off.

The music of the movie is definitely great. I'm glad this set comes with a soundtrack CD. Something I wish more deluxe packages came with in regard to movies like this with really memorable scores.
Actually, there is still quite a bit of the turtle scene in Deodato's New Edit on the Shameless disc. Make no mistake, there is still animal violence in that version. Just the most upsetting stuff has been removed. If you are even faintly offended by any kind of animal violence, I would still avoid Deodato's New Edit. That's why I call it a "middle-ground" version between Grindhouse's cruelty-free version and the uncut version.

Might pick this up. Never owned it, but saw it online. The turtle scene got me pretty bad. I couldn't eat meat for weeks after seeing the movie. Definitely one of the most disturbing movies I've ever seen. I'm a pretty modest gore hound, but this was the edge for me.

yeah, usually I'm against any part of a film being censored but I will admit I can't watch gore if it's real. I love animals and it's too hard for me to watch those scenes.

I don't mind seeing an animal slaughtered if it is being eaten. Slaughtered in as humane a way as possible.

I don't equate that with cruelty.

Simply trying to torment an animal is another matter - I hate that.

what about if it's slaughtered to make a shocking movie, like in this case?

I suppose it's inevitable, but does every topic on the movie really have to go on and on about the animal violence and whether it's acceptable? When I first heard about the movie, I was like, "SHEEEEIT, I DUNNO IF I CAN WATCH THAT," but when I actually did it wasn't so bad. I've seen it probably three times and have shown it to as many people, and will watch it plenty more times (Cannibal Ferox as well, if it gets a nice Blu-ray). To me, the violence is a non-issue at this point, it just makes me kinda squeamish.

Now if I remember correctly, some of the animal violence in Ferox was more tasteless. I'm pretty sure that was the one where an animal was tied to a stake while a snake inched toward it. Poor little animal was really freaked. I found that to be a lot more cruel than anything in Cannibal Holocaust.

So the uncensored director’s cut version will be the same as the Grindhouse DVD release. It's not the most complete version of the film, there is still 10 seconds missing from the "Last Road to Hell" sequence. The only release with that complete sequence is the "Ultrabit DVD" versions.

It's documented on Wikipedia.

You guys are lucky! Satisfied as I am with the Shameless disc, this is shaping up to be the superior disc by far. The inclusion of the soundtrack alone is brilliant. The score is both beautiful and haunting.

Grindhouse stated it's not on the negative so they'll be including the footage as an extra.

Haven't seen the Shameless disc myself, but I heard the master used was pretty subpar. Grindhouse are good about creating their own masters, and doing a damn fine job at it. This (and their upcoming BD for The Beyond) is sure to slap the competition around a bit.

By that I mean a lot.

If you don't think "its that bad" its because you lack a thing that people with above average intelligence possess, its called empathy. How would you like it if you were just chillin in your backyard enjoying a nice day and a bunch of huge guys who you would have no chance against came upon you and said "lets hold his ass down and jam this huge hunting knife into his throat and watch him scream in agony and we'll get all the juicy horrific looks of terror on his face all on film for this snuff film were gonna make and sell for a profit." I bet the moment they start pushing it in your adams apple like they did to the coatamundi the thought "this isn't so bad" would be the furthest thing on your mind.

I have the Shameless disc and on my 120" screen I think the Blu-Ray looks really good. Only way I'll get the US release is for the extras as I've already got the DVD. If transfer is close to being the same a muskrat being killed simply isn't worth $30 or $40 for the Grindhouse release. Still, glad this cult classic is finally getting a US release!

I agree that I don't want to see this thread descend into a debate about animal cruelty, which always seems to happen with this movie. There are numerous threads out there on the internet where you can go to talk about that.

I can't tell anyone what to post, but I'd just politely ask to try to keep this thread focused only on news and info about Grindhouse's release.
