It wasn't because That 80's Show was a terrible idea, it's because they forgot what made That 70's Show great. I look at The Goldbergs as what That 80's Show should have been. There's nothing wrong with the idea of this spin-off, but the execution has to be right.

The problem is it's damaged goods from the get go...a far more number of people hated how HIMYM ended then liked it and many really do not want to put in the time for this new show if the writing team is just going to go all weird at the end again. Better off letting this die. Just go watch the mother in a new show on NBC.

The show features a completely different setting, time period, etc. None of the same characters, the bar, etc. All new. No reason they cannot try it out.

Glad this didn't get picked up. Spin-offs aren't something that need to start getting popular with studios.

I'd say spin-offs are already pretty popular with CBS since they've got 4 spin-offs in their 2014-2015 schedule plus another 2 on the CW.

Yeah, they are extremely popular lol...and this isn't dead yet. CBS still has several hours to make a final decision and then there are many other networks/platforms interested in it. I would be more shocked if it didn't make it somewhere then if it did. Even if it is just a 10 episode first season somewhere (maybe to pair with the final season of Cougar Town?)

Seems like CBS already passed given the above quotes actually. Sometimes these high profile projects just don't happen, regardless of the talent behind it or how high profile it is. A terrible pilot can be a show killer. (like the Wonder Woman show a few years back)

They did pass at the upfronts, but it can still change (it probably won't at CBS) but regardless they have until 12am to decide for sure. All this press about it could alter their minds if people think it is a mistake or not.

I'm happy this didn't happen, mainly because I wouldn't like Greta Gerwig to be burdened with a full time show, or have her reputation tarnished if this wasn't a success.
