The 1946 version was my favorite, mainly because it was the dead-on, noir film that I was hoping to see. The quick banter, straight faced killers and dectective style charatcers, and an amazing femme fatale.

As for the 1964 version, it was very good as well, but not my favorite of the two. It's not to say I didn't like it though. It was nice to see Ronald Reagan and Norman Fell in those roles. And I always enjoy a good heist type movie, but was just not what I was looking for in the noir style. I'm guessing it didn't work as well as it was made for tv. Still, an enjoyable movie and glad to have the films in my collection.
Are there any licensing reasons why this won't eventually be upgraded to blu ray? Very tempted to pick up the DVD, but I'm sure that will guarantee it will be announced next month. I made that mistake before: I bought the DVD version of Ace in the Hole in Jaunary.

I was thinking the same thing might happen to me, but was in a big noir mood during that sale, so went ahead and picked it up. I picked up Vampyr as well, hoping it wouldn't get upgraded for at least a little while.

As for licensing, I'm not the guy who knows anything about licensing, but there are plenty here who do.

It'd be great if they released, 5X2 & Under the Sand aswell.
Please watch Swimming Pool.

It was one of those films that didn't really sound interesting to me for numerous years, but several months ago I recorded it via the Sundance Channel and I was speechless. Everything was phenomenal, especially the ending.

The only Ozon films I have seen are In The House and Swimming Pool.

I just looked up 8 Women and it certainly sounds like an entertaining film!

I may do a Kiarostami weekend and watch all 3 Criterion blu-rays and the two films which are extras.
My copy should be arriving today, although I have not seen any Kiarostami films. I'm thinking something like this.

Close-Up / The Traveler / "Close-Up" Long Shot / A Walk With Kiarostami

Certified Copy / The Report

Like Someone In Love

Didn't care for Shock Corridor. I'll give it another chance eventually because it seeks like a film I should have enjoyed more. The KKK scene was pretty awesome.

Shouldn't be. As long as Criterion has the license, they should be able to upgrade it. If the license runs out in the foreseeable future, then the DVD will go out of print. The biggest factor in whether to upgrade a title is undoubtedly whether the source they use (negative, interneg, print, whatever) is in good enough shape or requires restoration.

I like both. Each has their pluses and minuses. I think overall I prefer The Naked Kiss, but that's neither here nor there.

Aren't dvd and blu-ray licenses separate animals?

Actually, I'm wondering if it isn't going out of print. While it's still for sale on Criterion's website, it's only available at Amazon and bn.com from 3rd party sellers at exorbitant prices.

Does Criterion usually pre-announce when titles are going out of print?

My preferences are strong for the 1946 film, because it is a quintessential classic-era noir. Burt Lancaster was always one of the best leading men of film noir, and Ava Gardner is lovely. This film follows the vibe of the Hemingway story quite well, even in the ways that it expands on that story.

I do love the 1964 Don Siegel film, though. It's a trip to see Ronald Reagan as a villain, I love watching Lee Marvin in action, and I'm always up for an Angie Dickinson movie.

I do wish that Criterion would put together an upgrade to Blu-ray in the same style, by offering both movies in the same package.

I've only seen the '46 version, and your description of it is dead-on. I wasn't aware of the '64 version until now. I would second the motion for a release that offers both!

had a chance to watch my copy of Rififi the other night...

what an exhilarating film! I would have regarded it highly just for the heist sequence alone. just when I thought it could not have gotten any better, it did. I can't remember the last time I was leaning forward in my seat while watching a film.

definitely in my top 5 fav CC titles.. probably as high as #3

was every bit as good to me as other classic noirs that I have held so highly over the years - e.g., Double Indemnity, The Third Man

In my experience, it is a film that many people have never heard of, but they will thank you after you recommend it to them. I never get tired of Rififi, and the Blu-ray presentation is great!

I'd say that encapsulates it pretty well. When they announced it a few months back, I had not heard of it. My library didn't get the blu-ray upgrade for whatever reason and I thought of just borrowing their copy of the old CC DVD. I got a good deal and decided to pull the trigger on a blind-buy. 2nd best blind-buy ever! (Army of Shadows being 1) sorry - I feel inclined to rank everything!

A few years ago I saw Certified Copy at my local cinematheque. Before the film started the c'theque director asked for a show of hands as to who had already seen the film - several raised their hands. He then asked why people had come to the screening. Two girls remarked: "the director".

Wish here were more criterion boxsets like Zatoichi, amazing packaging, great films, great contents - lots to explore and treasure...

Can't afford AK 100, only one on amazon for £500 and not best condition. ...

I'm very jealous of your "Army of Shadows" purchase. I didn't discover that film until after it went out of print.

Depends on the contract, but generally speaking, I wouldn't think so. I think lessons were learned back in the infancy of home video, and by the time DVDs arrived, contracts probably included possibilities of future formats. (Just as I'm sure that music contracts negotiated for CDs included language for future formats.)

I would be very surprised if Criterion had to renegotiate a contract every time they wanted to upgrade a DVD to Blu-ray.

Yes, Criterion generally sends out an announcement that basically says "As of <date>, <title> will no longer be available".

The fact that a title may only be available from Criterion at a reasonable price may be an indication that they are running out of stock. But that could be mean it's going OOP, or it could mean that they're planning a dual-format release to replace it. Until someone at Criterion says (or leaks) something, it's just a guess on our parts.
