Hi guys - I have lurked and posted a few messages here and there, but I wanted to start a topic - want to get more integrated into the community. So this is it! How did you get into buying/collecting blu ray Steelbooks? What was the first you bought and why? What kept you coming back? Do you have an interesting story? I do. I'll share more after I've heard a few of yours.
I'll say this though - I bought a few DVD Steelbooks from FYE in the US - I used to drive 60 miles b/c they wouldn't ship. I bought Iron Man, The Dark Knight and Inception (blu ray). I believe Inception was the first blu ray Steelbook that I bought. I had a deal made with myself that I would not buy anything released outside of the US. I then modified that to not purchasing anything region locked. A Christmas present later (Sony region-free blu ray player) enabled me to start buying discs from anywhere.... Enough about me. Please share your experiences. Thanks! |

Stumbled across a Captain America (HMV) about 18 months ago in the local Cash Convertor. It has a dent, cost me £12 but I still have it. Wasn't even aware of steelbooks before then but my collection has spiraled somewhat since then...

Waaay back in the day I bought Casshern on DVD and it was a steelbook and thought it was gorgeous. (Still can't get it with English subs on Blu-Ray - it's the only DVD I still own I think).
My next was the Silent Hill DVD steelbook from Virgin Megastores. Saw it on the shelf and thought it was great too. After these two I paid more attention to releases. |

When I happened to walk into Future Shop on the same day that the first Transformers movie was released, and saw a giant display holding two versions (Con logo & Bot logo) of the DVD packaged in metal cases. Was hooked right there & then.

I work for target overnight and the morning when Django was coming out I was working late and when I was finally ready to go I saw the display at the front. I grabbed the Steelbook thinking it was just a regular exclusive like an extra disc. Then noticed it was heavy. I shortly thereafter googled the term Steelbook and quoted Neo. "Woah." Then I ordered a bunch of the 1st US wave of Reel Heroes Steels. The addiction went crazy when I started searching eBay and then crazier when I found Zavvi. Then I got sick of them denting dinging so easy. The addiction cooled off. Then I found those little bags and Steel Shells. The addictive went into a fire sale. Long story short I now have a full shelf of Steels from all over the world. One cool thing is I never got around to opening that Django Steel so technically I'm gonna call myself a Steelbook backdoor virgin.

I think it was the Minority Report UK steelbook that got me going. I had a few DVD steelbooks already which I sold off quick whilst they were still worth it though. I picked up the Robin Hood UK steelbook very cheap after that and that was the start of it.
I don't mind seeing so many steelbooks being released as I want hardly any of them. People who 'gotta collect them all' make me laugh...if John were here, he'd laugh too! ![]() |

Can't remember my first steelbook may have been Duel on DVD?
Or possibly Total recall DVD? Anyhoo Blu-ray steelbooks were just a natural progression and I have quite a collective personality when it comes to Games/CDs/DVDs/Blu-rays. If there is a film or game I want I always try to get it in a steelbook if possible. |
