I’m all for a “film-like” presentation because if anything I love *the look* more than anything I’ve seen that compares using digital camera capture……exception being the Panavision Genesis which can be made to look exactly like film if you know what you’re doing and desire that *look*.

But I’m wondering whether now if some home video enthusiasts are blending the idea of a lack of “film-like” presentation with *annoying* DNR artifacts, because I think there is quite a difference.

Like I said, I suggest people compare Patton to other *known* cases of DNR'ed Blu-ray titles.

It received it for the theatrical presentation (work done by Lowry) so it is baked in the cake so to speak and will be present (evident or not to “discerning” viewers ) in all home media editions, despite the format.

The ironic thing about the whole situation is that for people that have never seen the film, Patton as played by George C. Scott comes off in the end to many viewers as a royal son-of–a-b*tch.

I remember back in the day when one of my friends bought the DVD, he was so disgusted/enraged with the behavior of the main character in the film that he threw the DVD into his garbage immediately after viewing the movie.

lol, I guess that means……….. great acting !

Not if it is used to provide the typical HD camera look (e.g. sharpened and with clipped highlights).
The Crank look. If you use it in a more filmlike way (as you can) I like it, and other HD cameras.

Well, if it’s a matter of “principle” then like I said, do something that has half a chance for a successful outcome.

Send your *DNR-culpable* studios a complaint in writing, as I directed above.
Too much horn-tooting (of whatever their favorite bashing topic of the day is) by self-indulgent home theater *enthusiasts* ends up being wasted energy, which makes me think that they could care less about making real changes, and care more about seeing themselves in posts on the internet.

Letters do make a difference…………….
http://www.zoetrope.com/zoe_films.cg...one&film_id=25

better yet, more surgical strikes by Bill Hunt et. al. have the greatest chance of success, now that content providers have moved from catering to early adopters and now are more interested in broadening their base with the more mainstream buying public.

b.t.w. michel,
Here’s a chance to be a real hero and give something back in a small but, very meaningful way.

Take that money you saved on not purchasing Patton and send it in…….

I am only familiar with broadcast (as I've mentioned we've a lot in my business that believe that simply using 24P provides a "film look") or my still cameras. So, not to incur a distraction here, but are you suggesting with respect to gamut and dynamic range? I'm sure with RAW 14 bit files the continuous tonal nature of film is essentially replicable for all intent, but dynamic range?

I had a relative who thought he was one too... but then he served under him and actually knew the man (Patton that is), so he probably would have found the portrayal to be quite well done!

Some actors can show great acting by playings SOBs... but some actors probably don't have to act that much!

One Japanese report appeared to suggest that the new technology would be able produce much higher-resolution images from existing DVDs, but did not address the apparent impossibility of this claim.

That's classic. I think you can stay on the bench for this one, Penton.

Complete biased crap:

Quote:
Toshiba ceded to the rival Blu-ray format in February 2008 after spending years developing its own HD-DVD next-generation video disc standard.
Trying to make out HD-DVD came first.

Quote:
HD-DVD was backed by a consortium of companies including Microsoft and Intel, while Sony is the lead developer of Blu-ray.
Trying to make everyone was behind HD-DVD and only Sony was Blu. ******s.

Quote:
The new DVD player will be backwards-compatible with standard DVD discs, according to the sources.
Would you expect a DVD player to not be compatible with DVDs????

Such a load of crap. Upscales. Great.
