The Mill Creek transfer of Happy Birthday to Me is better than most Scream releases. No compression issues, great detail and grain structure, and completely devoid of DNR & unsightly sharpening. It's a beauty in terms of vintage horror on Blu.

Scream has some really decent discs (From Beyond being a favorite), but too often they coast on the goodwill of the titles themselves and the extras produced. I couldn't care less about extras if the main feature quality is subpar, but they've essentially stated that they won't do much of anything to fix up poor transfers given to them because it's not economical to do so. I see their point, but I'm not going to spring $20 for Ravenous on Blu when they're likely using a 15 year old master from Fox, just like Twilight Time & Titus.

As far as compression, that's all on them. Fix that shit.

The Shadow is another one I never bothered to buy on DVD but want to get. I read some complaints on that one. But I'm a bit behind on buying so I haven't looked into it too much yet as far as that release goes. They Live had complaints also but heck, I hadn't seen it since VHS, so I was thrilled with the BD.

Look at that cap from their darkman release.

Scream really need to sort it out!

To those who will never say a bad word and keep singing Screams praises, you are are spoling it for everyone else. If you keep praising and applauding these bad releases then nothing's ever going to change regarding quality issues.
I don't have Darkman so I can't say much other than by the looks of that screen cap, the German BD looks better.

No release is perfect, it's life. If I don't like a transfer I see one of two things happens. I sell it or put it in permanent storage for gifting to someone else who doesn't care about pq. I do have friends like this.
I too haven't bought any that disappointed me. I don't have all that many. But so far, so good. I was real happy with Lifeforce. The only time I saw it was on On Demand, so not much to compare with. But I thought it looked great.

I hope they have good transfers for the Halloween Collection. I know most of the time it's the transfer that they are supplied with that is the problem.

Yeah, I say cancel it I wouldn't support that release. I thought Darkman was their worst release regarding picture quality to date but even that release was saved due to the extensive extras. Unfortunately Ravenous has no redeeming qualities better to wait for another release elsewhere.

Final Exam is not an up convert! It is a very strong transfer and is pure 1080p. Well worth owning!

No studio is perfect but haters are going to hate no matter what..
You forgot more detail aswell.

You really are fanboys of the highest order aren't you?

Scream Factory could release a turd gift wrapped with extras and you'd be as happy as can be.

Unbelievable..

Some people won't admit how bad some of Scream/shout factory releases are. I own over 30 of them and I can name quite a few.

In all fairness, the Scorpion dvd of FINAL EXAM wasn't too shabby. Not like the blu is a huge step up but it's nice to have it in hi-def even if I don't like the film. At least those who enjoy it can have the best presentation but if you're not a big fan, the dvd is fine. It might even have more extras. Does anyone know if all the extras from past FINAL EXAM dvds were ported over to the blu?

I know that the commentary with one of the producers was not ported over from the Katarina's Nightmare DVD.

Oookay. RAVENOUS looks alright... maybe it could look better, but it is an HD print (an old one) and not an upconvert like the PHANTASM 2 blu. Check out the wood detail to the right of the psycho marine in screen cap 5.

DVD:

Blu:

So what is the problem here? Sure they could have used a better source, but it IS an HD source. Same thing with the (DNRed) DARKMAN release. Is the german one better with better texture? Yes! But it IS in HD. You guys are nuts: one minute you're praising the hyper-tealing revisionism of past movies or defending what are obvious upconverts, and the next you're trashing releases that may be better, but at least are in fact upgrades from the dvd.

Now I will agree that Scream! needs to lower the prices on movies they release that they know are either ports of prior HD releases or are upconverts. Simply slapping on a few extras doesn't justify a $25 price tag Cliff, especially when I can get the same thing with all the prior DVD extras on a german blu for half that price (cough CAT PEOPLE).

Looks like an upconvert to me with the key word being "looks". The picture quality is total crap. Have you seen it or are you going by caps? I actually saw it.

PHANTASM 2 wasn't an upconvert and looks better than RAVENOUS.

As for CAT PEOPLE, does the German blu look better than the SF disc?

I have both the German and SF disc and they look about the same. SF is marginally better.
