I'm not gonna go into the details on this, but there are so many things about True Lies that just screams to me the idea and execution of the film went something like this: Arnold has his first real failure when Last Action Hero bombs in '93, while Stallone finally delivers a one-two punch with the double success of Cliffhanger and Demolition Man the same year. Arnold, clearly still big on his ego, decides he can't let Sly finally take his throne. So he called Cameron up (while Cameron was probably doing some deep sea underwater stuff in preparation for Titanic) and told him that he can't let Sly beat him. Cameron sighs and says "Call me back in 3 days". So Cameron lazily rushed out an action movie script with all the tropes (as well as outdated racist villains), and they shot it on the quick just to make Arnold happy. Maybe Cameron owed Arnold a favor. |
