It is indeed mate. I pissed myself laughing at that Hound Titan pic!

To be fair the set is identical in Japan so it was a valid question. Most people know that half of my pickups are imports.

I watched both sets of OVAs and I didn't think they added too much unless you love tits.

Don't care for Diebuster, but Gunbuster I'd buy again in a heartbeat if Discotek were to pick it up.

They've condensed and heavily edited 3 hours of material into 1 ½. Completely skipping events, characters, Ace o Nerae! Parodies, and sub-plots from the OVA in the process. What’s left is just a very bare bones version of the main narrative minus the heart and emotional build-up that permeated through the show in its uncut form. Without going in-depth, that’s certainly more than just a bit of “tits” I think.
Outside the extras and novelty of being able to hear what the original voice cast sound like 20 years later, there is almost no reason for the Movie version to exist, and even if you can only get the DVD version of Gunbuster, then that would still comes recommended a million times before the Movie on BD.

Diebuster Movie is an improvement I must say though. The less you have bare witness to Diebuster is always a good thing.

I wouldn't say so. The absence of episodes 2 and 3 all but erases whatever relationship Nono and La'c had making it a very awkward transition from the end of the first episode and suddenly jumping to 4. The small scene on the space plane didn't help much. I also have no idea why they omitted Casio's scene explaining the age and mystery surrounding Dix Neuf, since it gets referred to anyway during the movie version's climax.

Eh.. no you're certainly right but that line was an attempt at being facetious. Guess I didn’t do too good a job of it. That was just me trying to no so subtlety show my disdain for Diebuster, by saying the less amount of time its up on the screen the better.

I generally consider Gunbuster to be the superior story but by no means do I think Diebuster is actually bad. It had an interesting world, goofy yet eye catching designs as well as action and did a decent job of being its own thing using the themes from the original without becoming a complete slave to it.

Its not bad per say, but it is decidedly average and undeniably bad as a follow up to Gunbuster.
How Gainax went from Gunbuster’s expertly crafted and realized sci-fi world full of characters with genuine character, plot devices non insulting to one’s intelligence centering around light travel and relativity, enthralling space battles, and melodrama, with one of the most memorable endings in anime, to Diebuster’s superfluous fan service filled, slapstick comedy schlock of soullessness, pathetic CG battle sequences and utterly unremarkable finale is beyond me. I find the contrast in quality of content between the two to be quite immense.

Even when comparing the two main protagonists from their respective shows, there is no real comparison worth making. Nono is an air-headed plastic waste of a shell as a character devoid of any real human traits outside of incessant screaming and crying, the polar opposite of the rationally driven, fervent yet clumsy, and oh so charismatic Noriko.

Its very apparent Gainax made Diebuster for a more modern, hyperactive audience in mind and it suffers endlessly because of that, and whilst I didn't expect Diebuster to live up to the majesty of Gunbuster, for Diebuster to be related to, even in the smallest of senses to the legacy of Gunbuster is like slander on the good name of Top o Nerae!.

Actually the more I think about, I do consider Diebuster to be bad. It just feels like a poorly made and misdirected creation.
But you know, blah..blah..opinions and such.

Completely agree. What happened to the awesome space opera/mech stuff like Yamato/Star Blazers, Harlock, Macross, Gunbuster, Megazone 23 etc.? Just look at that gorgeous attention to detail in the hand-drawn cel-animation. You don't see that anymore really. Will this become a lost art?

Unfortunately yes. Computer animation is getting cheaper and cheaper, while hand drawn costs quite a bit, and is very time consuming. I like all those titles you listed, and hope that some studios "buck the trend" and keep 2D-Hand drawn around for a good long while.

Technology has changed and the way anime is made today is largely different. It's unfortunate in many respects. I love a lot of modern anime productions. I certainly see why the benefits would make it better and/or easier for many series. However, nothing is better than hand drawn animation that is then transfered to film, IMO. It's much more magical and beautiful. I miss classic anime style artwork... you almost never see that anymore from new series, films, etc.

So in a way it is a dying art-form -- in terms of that particular form of the craft. Hand drawn animation is disappearing almost everywhere. Very few series anywhere in the world are done this way now.

No doubt Gunbuster does better most categories, but at the same time I don't see how one could consider Diebuster to be soulless. It had a lot of energy in both its characters and set pieces. The only times the CG was jarring was for certain sequences involving the model for Dix Neuf and some of the swarms of space monsters. I do agree that the finale could have been a little better, though its overthetopness did set the grounds for the well-received Gurren Lagann that was produced later.

I liked the aura of mystery surrounding the show. While Gunbuster had more of a straightforward humans vs monsters premise, it also had great ideas with the whole time dilation aspect lending to great character moments and plot twists. Diebuster had the benefit of being the sequel so it had the opportunity to build upon the universe established in the first. But one added element was how it kept the viewer guessing as to what the possible connection might be to the original series. How many years has it been? What’s up with the new buster machines? Why are the space monsters back and different? These were just some of the questions that filled my mind as I watched and it was fun to see how the answers unfolded. In some ways I wish both had been a full series just to see further expansion of the universe and character developments.

Oh come now, really? Both Nono and Noriko did just as much ‘screaming and whining’ as one another. In fact, I’d argue that Noriko might have done more of that prior to the last fight of episode 4. I liked the contrast between the two characters. Noriko started off timid and with very low self-esteem. Nono began overly optimistic and naive which was a great juxtaposition against the other pessimistic and often overly confident pilots in Diebuster. Both went through a moment of realization of potential and growth by the end of their respective episode 4s. And by the end of each respective series, both had matured enough that they would willingly sacrifice themselves for the sake of their close friends and humanity. I could go on and on. I honestly think you and others are being a bit too dismissive.

I don't really like long winded diatribes but I do like Diebuster just as much as I like Gunbuster. Nuff' said.

Received this from Hasting last sale, I can't believed it that they actually mailed the LE, paid $22.44 for it so I wasn't getting my hopes up, but they did.

I just received Fate/Stay Night Part 2 to complete the 3 Blu-ray set, picked up all three at Fry's over the last month or so, for just $43 total. Now that I just recently finished watching Fate/Zero, I can continue on with the saga...

Also, I finally grabbed a cheap copy of Origin: Spirits of the past to replace a "backup" copy I had previously.

Nice GWG! Everytime I see your fantastic pics, I keep saying to myself: I need to get some purple carpet!!
Of course, when I mention this to the wife, I get...the look!
She wins this round.
