![]() Of course, predictably, they're right for exactly the wrong reasons. You don't need to be a Biblical literalist to be skeptical of NDEs. Near death experiences are unlikely to be true, not because there aren't postmortem accounts in the Bible (so what?), or because the book of John says no one has ascended into heaven except Jesus (again, so what?), but because there is no persuasive evidence today -- gathered under properly controlled conditions -- that these are actual, literal disembodied experiences. People who claim they had a near death experience or were floating outside their bodies in hospital rooms when they were clinically dead are unable to correctly answer simple questions like which playing cards were lying on the top of nearby cabinets and so forth. Further, we can actually trigger out of body experiences in people with drugs or just by activating or, rather, de-activating certain parts of the brain which locate your "self" inside of your body. Once that gets turned off, guess what? That's right, you feel like you have left your own body and are floating outside of it. Modern 21st century neuroscience tells us that the mind (consciousness) is what the brain does; there are no examples of minds without brains. Brain events create mental events. This is demonstrable with fMRI. Once your brain ceases to function, you cease to have mental experiences. There is no good reason to believe otherwise. There is a very interesting Intelligence Squared debate about this very subject (well worth watching, I might add!): |
