oh yeah, i too use a smith machine for bench press (because i work out alone) and my warm up last week was 185lbs x 20 reps, then 1 set of 205 x 10 reps and 4 sets of 205 x 10 reps; i also worked back.

i find it best to do counter exersizes i.e., one set of bench then one set of rowing a push/pull to keep balance between the groups.

travis, i would recommend once you get into it, you should do multiple compound movements to get the best results. for example i work out tuesday, thursday, friday & sunday; lets talk about tuesday.

tuesday:

breakfast: 2-3 eggwhites, bacon (2 strips) or sausage (1 pattie), 1 slice of whole grain/multigrains bread, oatmeal with fruit in it, a prune, coffee, supplements.

1-1.5hrs before my workout i have a 10-12g protein rich snack

30 minutes before workout, i have my pre-workout ritual, 1 pack of gatorade pre-workout chews, two scoops of C4 extreme pre-work out powder in 8-10 oz of water (that's some shit you will feel too brotha!)

i take a bottle of gatorade drink with me and drink the entire thing during my workout.

squats- i do full squats, below parallel, free weight, olympic bar, 100lbs 2 sets of 25 reps

deadlifts - free weights, olympic bar, i do 2 sets of 185lbs

clean & press 2 sets of 5 reps each of 95-100lbs

those are all i do for that day, but i do it in 20-30 minutes, no longer. it might not sound like a lot, but the body will let you know it's a lot. i drink a 20g protien recovery drink from gatorade as soon as i put all the plates & bars away. an hour or so later i eat a small meal (my pre-dinner meal) with about 14 - 15g of protien. then dinner about 5-6oz salmon, a baked sweet potato with butter with a splash of maple syrup and a piece of whole grain, multigrains bread and i finish it off with a 50/50 salad water, a prune & supplements. for bedtime (and i have this every night) a rice cake with peanut butter on it and a 6oz greek yogurt either peach or strawberry flavor.

for ease, those two snacks i mentioned, i now eat the oscar mayer P3 snacks, very convienent and portion controlled!

slow and steady, take your time sorness & injury are the two biggest reasons people stop working out. get help from folks in a gym who works there who knows what they are doing so you don't injure yourself. don't try to walk in and do what everyone else is doing, remember the injury thing. check your ego at the door. also, get yourself a body analyser type scale like the iHealth scale (that's the one i use), stand on it everyday, once in the morning, once about an hour or so before bed and it will keep a log of everything for you, it will trend your stats for you.

the importance of this is that sometimes what we see on the outside is slow to show, but you will almost always have results on the inside that you can't see or feel for a while but will always show up on this device. it will let you know exactly what's what and prove to you that things are happening or not happening. here is a sample (travis, you've seen me post this before)

[My Weight Summary]
Time: Jun 3, 2014 11:26 PM

Bone Mass: 7.2 lb(s)

all the info is stored on the cloud and can be viewd (and stored) on your iOS device (and i believe android too). very good info to have. i also have and use the blood pressure monitor dock attachment too, another iHealth product. good luck to you my friend, stick with it buddy!

that's a typical tuesday in the workout life of your Uncle Solarrdadd.

work your body right, feed your body right and sleep your body right; you will have a better body, trust me.
Thanks

A little leery toward deadlifts. I have dumbbells at home and about a year ago I pulled a muscle in my lower back...it sucked. A littlle sore today, but it feels great!

No problem avoiding heavy weights and keeping my ego in check. I plan to stay around 12-14 reps.

I really don't know about supplements and energy stuff, expensive in Taiwan. GNC stuff is more than twice the US price. Wife buys vitamins every trip to San Diego for her relatives, hasn't put us overweight yet.

Tried protein powder before from Costco, not crazy on it. Prepackaged food is not big here, wish we could get that P3 stuff. Getting fresh seafood, fruit and veggies is easy. Not big meat eaters, chicken and pork is everywhere but finding turkey is tough. Costco sells baked turkey breast that is ok.

I'll look for the scale.

Can anyone help me with how I should be taking my supplements? Mainly what to take and when to take them. I remember this one guy at my last job was telling me about amino acids, omega 3's and fish oil, etc, and from shoulder to shoulder he was huge lol. Not saying I'd want to be as big as him, but he certainly knew what he was doing. If it makes any difference, all of my workouts are done before noon, mainly in the morning.

Also, I do have some "Activit beachbody vitamins " that expired last summer but haven't been opened. Are those still good?
What is the most cost effective protein powder? I used to just get these chocolate and vanilla bags from Costco but I was thinking about switching them up.

Trying to get in shape before school starts

The big thing with supplements isn't when you take them. Just that you take them on a regular basis. At the very minimum you'll want a multi and some fish oil every day. The expired vitamins you have are probably fine btw.

Cost effective protein powder. You have a ton of options here. If you're still a member of costco stick to the whey protein bags or those jars whey protein from companies like ON. The thing about protein powder is you want to use it to achieve that 1 gram of protein per lbs of bodyweight ratio. You could purchase other brands which also mix creatine and taurine and other stuff in their mix, but I'd avoid it and just stick to the whey protein. As long as you get off your butt and exercise everyday and get enough protein you'll be good to go.

I've said it before and I will say it again,if you want to lose weight you do not need to spend loads of money on personal trainers, vitamins or any of that stuff.

Here's the three step rule:
1.Eat less
2.Eat better
3.Exercise

Those three steps are guaranteed to help you lose weight and not only will it do that but it will save you money as you are spending less on food and not dishing out on some fancy programme.

If you stick to that,I promise you that you will lose weight.

and reduce your sugar intake - watch the movie Fed Up and it all makes sense - went on a reduced sugar diet for 12 days and it really really helped. Drink wise: do not drink any 'diet' soda or even Gatorade (which is high in sugar), drink soda water, unsweetened ice tea, fresh squeezed orange/grapefruit juice.

Reducing your sugar intake would fall under "eat better"

I haven't seen Fed Up.

not really, because your body is supposed to break down fat - ingesting a ton of foods and drinks with sugar actually hinders the metabolism rate to break down fat. weight loss and sugar reduction go hand in hand.

Well we'll have to agree to disagree then....eating better for me would certainly mean lowering your sugar intake for one.

and all I'm saying is that the movie addresses the fact that many adults and kids who are having problems losing weight ... and exercising and can't seem to get rid of the weight attributes that sugar is the sole reason - it's not rocket science. get rid of sugar, and exercise, you WILL LOSE weight.

As I said,I haven't seen the movie so I can't comment on that but yes you are right,it's not rocket science, hence my original post with the easy three step rule to lose weight....I feel like we are going round in circles here so I will leave it at that.

deal! [shakes hand]

oh and I see what you're saying of the three you listed:

Here's the three step rule:
1.Eat less
2.Eat better
3.Exercise

2 - eat better, which includes watching and curtailing your intake of sugar.

I want to get in better shape as well. I weigh anywhere between 125 to 129 ibs. Now before you all say that's great, I have a stomach that I want to lose and my arms are skinny (don't left weights or dumbells)

Besides running and walking to try to lose my stomach, any drinks ideas to try that may help me? I drink a lot of pepsi's, I know that I need to cold turkey that it's hard to do that for me.

As you already know, that has to go,your diet has gave you the stomach so you know more than anyone what has put it there and what you need to cut back on or even cut out all together.

If you have switched to Diet do so and if you can't stop drinking it all together limit the times you can drink it and drink bottled-water at other times.

If you limit the time you drink it, don't go nuts, it's not an excuse to drink your normal days consumption in a couple of hours. Then just keep cutting the time periods you can drink Pepsi shorter and shorter. Start off with no Pepsi from say 10pm until lunchtime the next day, then just bring the first time earlier and earlier until you don't have anytime to drink it!
