Even worse, he continues to refer to watching his movies in HD. I stopped arguing the point long ago; it was like banging my head against a wall.

That's a good question. The only thing I can say is that he seems to notice that there's a difference, but actually prefers the DVDs. At one point, he even referred to the way that colors looked, and thought they looked better on DVD. Colors look more stable and natural on BD to me, even on things that are upscaled from Standard Def video (like the Farscape series). I can only think that my nephew is so used to DVD that he thinks that that is the way things are supposed to look, and that BDs look "wrong" somehow.

The smell of sulphur could apply to Rosemary's Baby as well. Or even more appropriately, to The Devil's Backbone...to go along with the 666 spine number.

Default Criterion Collection Discussion

I just realized something crazy! About last year I blind bought Close Encounters Of The Third Kind and watched it and enjoyed it. I knew Richard Dreyfus from other movies before this but I had no idea who the other actor was. Even this whole time until now while just glancing the amazon page about the movie I see that it was Francois Truffaut himself!

I'm fairly new to criterion collecting and really enjoying foreign releases so even if I saw the name when I first watched it, I still wouldn't have known it was the legendary director!

It was literally mind blasting! I really should re watch close encounters but I got a huge backlog to get through first. You know what they say...no time for love, Dr. Jones!

Picked up The Great Dictator and The Lady Vanishes today at Costco. TGD is a new title for me while TLV upgrades my ancient Criterion dvd edition. All the Criterions were $19.99 @ Costco even the bigger editions like IAMMMMW, Seven Samurai, and On the Waterfront. I've done pretty well for Father's Day with these and the four titles my daughter got me plus my wife got me Star Trek-TOS. So I'm set.......at least until the B&N 50% sale.

With all the discussion of dropping the dual-format editions it made me think-Has Criterion ever mentioned or been asked about including digital copies in their releases? Or does their Hulu Plus streaming make that kind of a moot point? Just wondering.

On the Image/Turner release of The Thing from Another World, one of the extras is the original novella by John W. Campbell Jr that is the basis for the film. That LD side is in CAV, so one steps through the story, page/frame at a time. If, however, you hit "play" at the start, you'll speed through the story while from your speakers you'll hear the audio from a teaser trailer for the John Carpenter remake.

It just occurred to me to wonder if this is mentioned in the entry for this title at the LDDB. Hold a mo'...nope, it isn't. I'll have to add that.
Wow.

True. Unless the blu-ray player is in a steel box/container that is protected from any electromagnetic pulse event! Maybe someone should invent and patent a steel box like this so it fits my Sony Blu-ray player! Muahahahaha.

Yes, I thought of those too. I think I might come up with a list of certain scents that would apply to certain films in the Criterion Collection and present my findings here in this forum.

Well I wasn't disappointed with Zatoichi, was beautifully filmed - the story was ok but wasn't amazing, but may need to rewatch as I was tired.

I was expecting to be cheesy/tacky and over the top but it was complete opposite.

If you're worried about your BD player surviving EMP damage, I think you need to be more worried about what generally causes EMP.... you probably wouldn't survive it!

The Straight Story and Elephant Man are only Lynch films I haven't seen yet - I really need to see EM though - would deb a nice deserving addition to the collection and may lead to more of his work in the collection.

But ever since another post rehear alerted to me it I would LOVE Medea by Lars Von Trier in collection - found a crappy copy of it, but never heard of it and I'm a HUGE Lars fan

I really hope they don't. The current blu ray is excellent. I'd consider it a waste of resources if Criterion gave it a release. They should release other things that haven't made it on to blu ray yet.

Tree of Life is a film that really doesn't need a plethora or indeed any extras, and this is coming from a big fan of extras.

I want it just to be in my collection - I agree the existing transfer is excellent, but no would really want it lol.

Tbh id be happy with The New World though.

I think sometimes its more for recognition than anything.

Elephant Man would be awesome. That's been on my wish list for quite a while.

The Tree of Life blu ray I have is excellent on it's own. I kind of hope that Criterion doesn't announce this one, because I KNOW I will double dip for it

This guy. You know how to sell me on something.

I don't mind all that much double dipping, but I would prefer to get a new film (new to me anyway) than one I already have. That doesn't mean I wouldn't double dip. When I do double dip, I always either sell off or give away the copy I'm replacing. Space is such a premium.

Yah thats fair enough, I am quite fortunate for space so I never have that worry.

With Criterions I am in process of upgrading all my DVD's and its not as exciting/fun for the films I'm not passionate about, but still want upgraded, especially boxsets that are £50+ >.<.

It is more exciting getting new stuff :P

In terms of extra for TTOL - they could include the 'auditions' from the boys, they were just chosen an put on set with Jessica/Brad and told to play/interact I think - so would be nice to see these scenes/clips.
