I've never heard of The Innocents, but the buzz here has piqued my interest. I am lukewarm on the other ones.. films I wouldn't mind seeing (no Shakespeare for me, though), but no blind buys for me this month.

I was catching up on a few pages of comments and keep seeing Don't Look Now "talk", is a rumor coming from anywhere specific?

Thanks!

Which release are you referring to? Charade had somehow slipped into the Public Domain, and there were several P.D. label releases that were undoubtedly bad.

Universal had done their own release, though it was after Criterion did their original DVD. The stickler is that Universal's release was only has an extra in the DVD set of their remake, The Truth About Charlie.

Hello all,

I am just writing to let you all know that I have updated my storefront on these forums (link in my signature) and I have included a large section of my Criterion Collection. I am obviously taking a hit on the price because I am marking them $20-$25 off of the MSRP price (in congruence with Barnes 'N Nobles' sales), but I feel it is for the best.

If you see something that you are interested in, please send me a private message.

(Note: There will be more updates in the future!)

So apparently, Twilight Time is scheduling George Sluizer's American remake of his Dutch film The Vanishing for October 14.

Wouldn't it be wild if Criterion decided to schedule the original for that date as well (or even anytime in October)?

Incidentally, there is a wonderful homage to Don't Look Now in the 2006 James Bond movie, Casino Royale. Think of Venice and Eva Green's red dress.
Flatliners also has a great homage to Don't Look Now... Donald Sutherland's son Kiefer is stalked by someone in a red sweater in that one.

I think that I have seen the film twice. I don't own the film, so I must have gotten it from the library the first time although I do not recall. I remember it being really bad though and I was excited when I saw that it was streaming on Netflix probably 4 years ago or so and that was the second time I saw it. Both were Bad.

(Seriously, you guys should check out Twilight Time's release of Rapture, she is amazing and it's a great film as well!)
Rapture was one of my favorite blind buys last year, so I'm definitely intrigued to see Sundays and Cybele the more that I think about it. I was checking out the premise last night, and it looks like my sort of odd flick.

I bought Picnic at Hanging Rock from Barnes & Noble during lunch break, and it's a handsome package. I plan to get a jump on reading the novel tonight so that I can see the movie this weekend after I'm done.

Have you seen the movie before? It's spectacular.

My copy arrived this morning, as well.

will do the 2 month free B&N membership to pick up the following:

Paris, Texas was one of the first titles I had my eye on (ages ago) and still haven't pulled the trigger.
All That Heaven Allows I mentioned that I haven't seen any Sirk yet.. I just recently remembered that I saw the film Far From Heaven which, I believe, was intended to be a film in the same vein. I really enjoyed that one.
Picnic at Hanging Rock
Red River

I see no reason why I wouldn't enjoy all of those films.

If you enjoyed that one, I'm sure you'll enjoy this one too!
It's so beautiful! (by the way, I would suggest this for viewing at Christmas period)
I love Sirk melodramas!

Let's hope for Magnificent Obsession soon too, with the same starring couple, and Written on the Wind!

+1

Todd Haynes nailed it with "Far From Heaven" as far as riffing off what Sirk was going for. And yeah, both "Magnificent Obsession" and "Written on the Wind" are SO worth seeing.

Sirk made movies back before the term "melodrama" was considered some sort of negative attack. And he did it really, really well.

Actually, before I saw "Far From Heaven" I didn't know anything about Douglas Sirk. I just saw this movie that looked good and had Julianne Moore in it, so I checked it out. After that, it was off to the races.

I thought The Vanishing would be one of the announced Criterion titles yesterday but it is a possibility for October. That would be one insane month with the other Criterion titles that have potential to be released that month.

here's to hoping that it has the same effect on me! generally speaking, I am a huge fan of classic technicolor films. pretty excited to see this one now!

Tell me about it. All three of his films in the Collection are stellar.

I still have Imitation of Life on my DVR. I'll get to that soon.

The TCM channel are currently having a Rock Hudson Thursdays marathon for the month of June, so they already broadcasted Maginificent Obsession, Written on the Wind, All That Heaven Allows, & The Tarnished Angels I believe.

I owned the Criterion DVD of Picnic at Hanging Rock, and I watched it about six or seven times. I've never read the book, though, so I'm wanting to read it before watching the Blu-ray upgrade of the film.

On an unrelated note...

Georges Franju's Judex is out today as well, but I just can't quite get excited about this movie for some reason. Franju's Eyes Without a Face is one of my favorite Criterion titles, and I love his style of filmmaking, but I'm going to hold off on Judex, because I can't get the spark of motivation to buy it. I think that my hesitation stems from the fact that the movie is a remake of a serial, and that I'm the type who wants to get the whole story by seeking out the serial first and going down that rabbit hole full-tilt. I understand from the reviews that the Franju movie probably works well on its own terms as a surreal work, but I still can't shake the notion that I'll only have one side of a coin if I buy the Criterion Blu-ray. I dunno. I may change my mind during the 50% Off sale.

I would love Sluizer's original THE VANISHING in the Criterion collection! It's one of the most unsettling and downright disturbing films I've ever experienced. His own remake though is embarrassingly bad with an altered ending that is "dumbed down" for us Americans.
