It goes for over $100.

Two months ago I picked up a Criterion copy of The Third Man on Blu Ray for $68.99 plus shipping through the Amazon Marketplace. As this is much lower than it's usually priced, I was extremely worried, but I was very happy with what I received. There's some edge wear on the outer case (it's the digipak version). Otherwise, the condition is near flawless.

I regularly track the OOP Criterions on the Amazon Marketplace and every so often they show up at relatively good prices. The Man Who Fell to Earth recently showed up for under $100 which is quite unusual. And I'm still mad I didn't grab a Last Year at Marienbad that showed up for $40.

The price :P and I get a bit excited with buying when its things I like

Finally upgraded Qatsi Trilogy, only ever seen on DVD so quite excited about this - Just wish Criterion had the uncorked version as an option as I find the uncorked version is visually more stunning - however can understand that the director wanted the widescreen.

Least I have a DVD rip of the uncropped 4:1 version

I need to watch the other two films more as I feel I am only every watching Koyaanisqatsi - I know there is a lot of hate with the 3rd film, well not hat but dislike - I actually enjoy it a lot, the score is great and the imagery was a complete contrast to the first two films, intentionally - it emphasises the title Life At War - the chaotic imagery of technology and modern society clashing with each other and creating an explosion in your head, it isn't perfect but it still works in the trilogy. But even if you hate it, or are avoiding it - watch it for Glass' score :P

I need to rewatch though as I am only going off a viewing from years ago >.<

Just had an idea I would have loved as a supplement - would have loved to have seen certain people who featured in film have a small interview, or just see them now, would have been cool... would be like looking at kid actors all grown up :P

-

Wow the Bluray version is incredible - the detail in the desert shots is mind blowing !

Has there ever been even so much as a hint that The Lady Eve may be coming to BD?

I can think of a bunch.
I totally agree with all of these except that I just received Lady From Shanghai and am fine with that. I have Pickup on South Street on DVD, but would like to see that upgraded for sure. Big Heat is a favorite, but I'm not into Twilight Time's higher prices for nothing more spectacular than a limited run. My DVD will have to do until someone (Criterion) upgrades that one too.

Just tried to pre order some releases on Amazon using points and the site wouldn't allow it, saying points could not be used on pre order items. What?! I used to do this all the time. When did this policy begin? Does it apply to all Blu ray pre orders?

Ditto....I'm getting the 4K restored new version of TCM's The Lady From Shanghai tomorrow, so we'll see on that one. Looks like some decent extras too. I have The Big Heat, it sure would be nice to have Criterion extras though. I doubt we'll see see Asphalt Jungle or Out of the Past on Criterion. I'm hoping for BR Criterion releases (finally) of the 1946 The Killers, Thieves Highway, and Night and the City, to name three. I'd love to see a Sony BR release of In a Lonely Place and Paramount release Criss Cross on Blu. The Prowler, Crime Wave, Act of Violence, They Live By Night, This Gun For Hire...

Plans for the B&N sale next week:

Definite

Persona
Picnic at Hanging Rock
Ivan's Childhood
The Friends of Eddie Coyle (DVD)

Maybe

Judex (I enjoyed Eyes Without a Face - not sure if I'll pick this one up)
L'Eclisse
Rififi (already own the DVD copy - worth the upgrade?)
Red River (The packaging is really depressing to me - way too large)

Been away from my daily stalking and sporadic posting on this thread for a couple weeks, and just noticed while reading through old posts here that Criterion issued the replacement case for The Night of the Hunter... quickly hopped onto Criterion's site and ordered it, and paired it with the DVDs of The Friends of Eddie Coyle and Downhill Racer.

Now I'm ready for the July B&N sale!

Judex is a lot better than Eyes Without A Face, in my opinion.

The Rififi Blu-ray looks great.

The Red River packaging should not turn you off from purchasing it. It's one of the greatest westerns to be made and the original novel is included with the film. What more could one ask for?

I can think of a bunch.
I can think of about 200 film noirs that need to be upgraded to Blu-ray, because I own almost that many film noirs on DVD. There are a few that will probably never see the light of day in high definition, since the process of bringing them to DVD specs was already problematic enough, but there are also a great many (the Warner RKO titles, etc.) that would really quicken my pulse if they were released in high definition.

Out of the Past is the obvious example, since that's my all-time favorite movie. I'd also love to see Pickup on South Street upgraded, as well as the other Samuel Fuller film noirs.

Right now, my big Criterion wishlist consists of the Jules Dassin noirs that he made here in America. Brute Force, The Naked City, Thieves' Highway, and Night and the City.

The current Blu-ray releases of The Big Heat and The Lady from Shanghai are both spectacular, and I'm immensely happy with them. I've got the region-free Italian Blu-ray of Gilda as well, but it's still in my unwatched stack. I'm looking forward to seeing how much it improves over my old DVD copy.

To get a lot of film noir on criterion more quickly I think a box set is the best option. A criterion film noir series volume 1 would be a good start and if sales are good then they can release other ones.

I have a dream...

...of Criterion compiling all of the films in the five volumes of the Warner Bros. Film Noir Classic Collection and releasing them in a gigantic Zatoichi-style box set.

Warner will probably keep their goose with the golden egg, though.

I was surprised to find you can still rent the Blu-ray of Last
Year at Marienbad from Netflix. It's an option for those who just want to see it.
