It's no secret that a lot of the reviews on this website are controversial around here. For example, I think that They Live via Shout Factory/Umbrella has a four star rating for PQ despite the fact that theres an obvious amount of filtering going on. There are also some blu rays that are under appreciated as far as PQ and SQ goes. I thought that The Birds looked really good whereas it's considered somewhat weak by some well respected members on here. For me the most overrated blu ray is Heat. It's a film I am rather fond of but theres a flatness to the blu ray. It's also dimmer than I would like but it got the full 4 stars. Maybe I have to watch it all the way through but it only seemed like a marginal upgrade from the DVD as far as detail goes. I'm not saying it's a botch job, but I can't believe that's the best the film is ever going to look. Most underrated blu ray is pro So I ask you, fellow blu ray dot comers...what are your most overrated and underrated blu rays in terms of PQ SQ? |

Well, first of all, one needs to bear in mind that reviews are subjective, and meant to reflect only the reviewer's opinion, based on their experience of the disc on the equipment they use.
The reviews that I see in contention most often here, are those that are now five or more years old, and one needs to remember that HD equipment has advanced a fair amount since then. While I don't think it's fair to go back and ask a reviewer to re-evaluate a disc several years on, I do think it's prudent for those who would complain to note the year in which the disc has been reviewed. The first that come to mind are the reviews of the Atlas Shrugged movies. I'm no Ayn Rand fan, but those reviews were not fair to the material.
But I think bad reviews with mis-representative scores are an exception on this site. As a rule, the Blu-ray.com reviews aren't too bad. Anything Dr. Svet Anatov writes about is always worth a read. Then again, as general Criterion reviewer he gets to write mostly about good movies ![]() |
