There's a thread dedicated to the sale. This thread should be for the discussion of the actual films themselves and for news of upcoming releases.
Umm no? Nothing wrong with seeing what people have ordered and what they are excited for.

It is Criterion related and it appears everyone is excited to see what people have got and are excited to see. Also its nice seeing photos of what people have got and stuff.

Don't be boring... just skip this thread during the sale.

I think the editing and use of the archival footage is absolutely brilliant for its time, but I think the story and acting is just not enough. Do I sound blasphemous for saying this? This movie is nearly 40 years old and it probably helped influenced a lot of later war films. I really want to like this but it wasn't substantial enough for me. I don't think it was really pretentious either, but at around 80 or so minutes, its more or less a small story about a big event (the invasion at Normandy on D-DAY). I think the fact that it goes into the diary of soldiers is a good vehicle, but the emotion wasn't there. It was truly sad though and tragic as WW2 movies usually are. I honestly am not sure I want to buy this during the Criterion B&N 50% sale next week. I think I'm going to pass.

Does anyone out there love this movie or at least have a certain affinity to it?
I loved Overlord so much on Criterion DVD that I rushed to buy the Blu-ray when it came available. For me, it's probably the best cinematic depiction to date of how one's individuality and dreams can become lost in the cogs of the war machine, so to speak. The footage of the otherworldly and terrifying machines that were employed to sweep mines and such during the beach invasions is masterfully juxtaposed with the idyllic studio footage of the main character. I can understand why others do not warm up to the film, but I've always found it to be intensely engaging.

I'm not suggesting that people don't post such stuff. Just that they confine it to the thread that already exists specifically for such a discussion:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=242733

Is that so unreasonable? Do we need TWO threads with the same content? Not everyone is as excited as you are to see lists of films and photos of boxes. My interest is in the movies themselves. Obviously you think that's boring of me. Is that a minority opinion round here?

This thread is for discussion on CRITERION and anything related, which includes discussing what items they are interesting in buying from Criterion, images of their items, showing excitement about Criterion orders etc etc

When people post lists about what they're going to buy or asking for recommendations in choosing between a few titles. It usually ends up in a discussion about a Criterion film however brief it may be.

People have always done it in this thread. Why are you complaining about it now?

More Blind Buys:

Insignificance
Topsy-Turvey
Jules & Jim
Tokyo Story
Moment of Truth

Bit iffy with Moment of Truth just cause the violence to the bulls, but I'm interested in seeing the controversy and the drama, has got some good things to look out for so worth a try for £9.

Quite frankly, I find such postings rather monotonous (while simultaneously admitting that I've posted such myself on occasion; so I'm a hypocrite), but if others enjoy that sort of thing, far be it from me to say they shouldn't. And they do often prompt discussions of the films themselves.

The benefit to posting it in the Hot Deals thread is you stay on top of the coupons and such.

Default Criterion Collection Discussion

People have always done it in this thread. Why are you complaining about it now?

I think Duggie Walker is mostly talking about posting constant updates about criterion sales. I mean I wouldn't want to read through pages of pages of "shipped today!" and "just ordered these movies, I hope the box comes in mint condition! I'm so OCD about that ".

I mean there's a thread for criterion sales where that can easily be posted. So I will join the minority in that opinion, the gauntlet has been dropped!

Related to criterion, I rented Le Samourai and watched it again. Damn, that movie is so boss. I'll never get over how cool of a character that Jeff Costello is. He makes it seem so effortless with his ice cold glaze. I also picked up on a thing I didn't notice for the first viewing. SPOILER in below tags:

[Show spoiler]the bartender was in on the murder, I totally missed up on that on my first viewing. It totally adds another layer to the overall plot.

The cinematography, the acting, the set pieces, the music, oh man the music, is all so damn good. I wish I had watched this movie years ago.

Le Samouraļ is brilliant, and it's been one of my all-time top five movies forever. Alain Delon's Jef Costello is the epitome of cinematic coolness, and this lends more intensity to the few scenes where he does betray emotion or stress. I love how this film drives home the idea of figurative walls closing in on a character, as is shown during the opening credits. Costello handles everything on his own terms, though.

I love Jean-Pierre Melville's direction in Le Samouraļ, and I love the low-key music. I also love the film's homage to the 1942 movie, This Gun for Hire, starring Alan Ladd.

This is still at the top of my list of most-desired Blu-ray upgrades from Criterion. I have the French Pathe Blu-ray, but the picture quality is digitally scrubbed almost beyond recognition, so I always return to my Criterion DVD when I want to revisit the film.

Asking for recommendations is a different thing. That does lead to discussion of the movies. I think you know the kind of posts I'm talking about.

Jeez - you'd think I'd suggested some kind of ban on talking about it. I'm just saying there's a thread already dedicated to the subject. But I can see that's too much effort for you.

So fine, whatever. You find it really interesting to read lists of movies people are going to buy. Knock yourself out.

I just hope I never get stuck with any of you guys at a party.

This may be a tad inappropriate but just looking at covers...

Is it me or does the cover for WEEKEND look like it has a giant erect penis on the front? :/ the body from a distance looks like a penis :/ is this intentional? O.o rather fitting though....

I never noticed that and I don't know if it's intentional... But now I cannot unsee haha. Not that it's an issue. If it was intentional, it's pretty funny that Criterion managed to get an enormous erect penis to sit proudly on regular store shelves like that. Great film by the way.
