Default Beatles : Vinyl vs Digital

What's the best route to go for this? The original Vinyls or the 2009 remaster? I'm worried that the dynamic range has been compressed in the re-release. Has anybody compared the two? Which would you recommend?

If by original you mean the UK parlophone pressings, then definitely those. After that the UK Blue Box set which you can get used for between $300-$500. If you go for the 2009 remasters get the set that was pressed by Optimal in the EU, not the U.S. pressing.

However, the soon to be released MONO boxset looks like a winner as it is remastered from the orginal analogue tapes. The STERO boxset was NOT.

Thank for the quick responses . A friend of mine is selling his original UK parlophone collection and I'm gonna jump on that.

Nice! I have the Blue Box set and will be getting the new MONO boxset that's being released in September.

Are they the stereo or mono releases?

I'm gonna check with him again but I think they're mono. I just sampled a few stereo versions of the songs on iTunes and I find the instrument placement to be slightly awkward when listening with earphones.

It would be great of they are the MONO releases. Yellow Submarine, Abbey Road and Let It Be were the only albums recorded in stereo.

The vocals in some of the songs such as Yellow Submarine and Here Comes The Sun are oriented to the right channel and not centralized. Is this normal? (Talking about the iTunes version, which is the 2009 remaster.)

I don't do iTunes and I also rarely, if ever, listen with headphones. But to answer your question, it's not uncommon for that to happen and would depend on how it was laid down in the studio.

I just listened to both songs through my headphones and Here Comes The Sun vocals came from the right side only. However, Yellow Submarine vocals came through both sides of my headphones. I hope this helps.

Thanks .

How do you feel about that? It wouldn't have bothered me if I was listening with loud speakers but I find it a bit uncomfortable with earphones.

I don't use my headphones that often, so it doesn't really bother me too much. I'm happy I can still hear them at all after all the abuse these poor, tired ears have been through. Happy listening.
