The nice thing about the digipaks for the box set is that they have full-width art on the inside as well, though.

Now having seen that, man I kind of want The OCD side of me kind of wants it. Oh well, I'll wait and see if I can find it in Japan later this year.

Man, I've just discovered I've been blocked by the Ghibli_intl Twitter account. That really bums me out! The only thing I can imagine doing that offended him or her is asking about Cagliostro subs and lamenting the loss of On Your Mark.

Anyone else here blocked by them? You'll know you're blocked if you try to follow them and can't.

According to some reviews on amazon.co.jp, it seems Nausicaa has been quite improved: the red tint has disappeared and there are less scratches...

Regarding Spirited Away - I have the original Japanese DVD release of this. I'm curious about the English subtitles on the new Blu - does the new Japanese Blu-ray use the same English subtitles as the original Japanese DVD release? Or have the resorted to the dreaded English dubtitles?

I ask as I'm sure I remember reading that different subtitles were used on other Ghibli films when comparing Japanese DVD and Blu-ray releases.

Not sure why they differed though! Or maybe my memory is playing tricks on me?

The problem with this twitter account is the person running it never responds to anything. I know some users operate that way and I appreciate that they can't respond to everyone; but he/she even teased about doing an AMA on reditt which never came about even though it was met with a positive reaction from its followers.

This is certainly a surprise development regarding the Miyazaki set. I didn't remember that there was an issue with color timing on this but looking at those screenshots the Blu-ray was warmer and was not quite as accurate (if the DVD source was accurate, which it seems to be) just in terms of the grading on some of it giving off a pink/red hue. Skin tones look slightly reddish. Obviously, the clarity and everything is quite amazing and effective on the earlier edition from Ghibli, but they didn't get the color 100% right I guess.

So the new Blu-ray restores the original color scheme to Nausicaa? I wonder if this is the only film with this kind of difference... also having less film scratches sound good, as long as it was done in an unobtrusive way.

In fact, since I already owned the Japanese DVD, this red tint on Nausicaa was the reason why I didn't start the first Ghibli collection on bluray back in 2010...

My boxset arrived today and I intend to watch Nausicaa today, I have a calibrated projector so I'll be able to confirm later if yes or not they have reverted to the original color scheme of the DVD.

I'm not sure if the new Japanese bluray uses the same English subtitles as the original Japanese DVD release because I do not have the DVD, but I did watch Spirited Away before on its U.S. Disney release. There are certain parts that are truly different. For example, the scene where Chihiro and Haku were hiding, and Chihiro asks Haku about how he knew her name - In the U.S. Disney release, the subtitles to Haku's response were something like "I have known you since you were young" (I don't remember it word for word, but the idea is there) - In the new Japanese bluray, it was "You told me very long ago" (same, may not be word for word but the idea is there). Then when Haku returns into the inn and the other creatures tell him that Yubaba is looking for him - In the U.S. Disney release, his response was "I know. It's about my mission, right?" - In the new Japanese blu-ray release, his response was "I know. I've been searching too." (may not be word for word).

Yeah I hope these 2 examples are enough to discern the different versions of the English subtitles! Although I am not a Japanese, I have watched enough Japanese films and learned enough Japanese to identify that the English subtitles on the new Japanese bluray release is far more accurate than the one in the U.S. Disney version. Perhaps Disney tailored the subtitles to be more accessible to american culture? Should be, I guess. They even added extra lines in the English dub.

The US DVD of Spirited Away has two subtitles tracks: English, which is the subtitles to the Japanese track; and English SDH, which was the English dubtitles.

Yeah, whenever I watch the movies in Japanese, I would use the English subtitle for the Japanese audio and not the SDH. The subtitles that I recalled was from the subtitle and not the SDH, because when I watched the movie in English dub, I did not turn on any subtitles. So that should be it.

I have seen Castle In The Sky on Disney's bluray and on the DVD that came with the combo pack (not sure if the DVD is the same as the one released before the bluray), but I have not seen it on the Japanese BD yet so I can't compare. When I watched Spirited Away on the US release, I just watched it 'as it is' without paying much attention to the translation of the subtitles, and I only realized the differences when I watched it on the Japanese BD. Same for Castle In the Sky, maybe I'll be able to realize some differences when I see it on the Japanese BD

I'm not sure if I'm the only one here with the box set though, but the 2 pictures of the boxset posted by the user 'bensunt' on page 118 of this thread are those of mine haha ~ And sorry that I couldn't answer your questions before because I have not viewed the other discs yet!

No problem!

You have to check out the Japanese BD release for Princess Mononoke too (not sure if its original Japanese DVD features the same English subtitles or not), because there is a scene in the movie where if you have been watching it on the Miramax DVD with English subtitles, watching it with the Japanese BD's English subtitles will sort of change your impression of that scene ~
