I don't understand the disappointment with Sony's transfers. For the most part, these are lower-budget, early 90's films. Most movies from that era were shot on softer, grainier film-stock (just look at the Brosnan Bonds.)

That said, they are a night and day improvement over Toho's transfers. What more can you ask for?

So why do lower budget 60s films from AIP look better than the first batch of Godzillas from Sony did ? I think some were on par or better than the Sony DVDs of the same title...but I wasnt overwhelmed.
I don't believe in lower budget movies not being able to look like something that was made yesterday. Anything can be done with a little time/effort and care. I don't expect perfection but I don't think asking for movies on a blu ray disc to look like blu ray quality is asking for too much is it
At the end of the day Im getting these even if its another mixed bag because they all should have higher resolution if anything..

This is a cool announcement.

But what's the deal with Sony releasing so many Godzilla blu-rays this year, and practically nothing else in the catalogue space? Aside from films they license out, it's basically nothing but a bunch of Godzilla double packs and Ghostbusters for the entire year. What made them all of a sudden go all-in with Godzilla, but nothing else? Just seems very strange to me...

I assume the 1st wave of Godzilla titles did fairly well for them to announce another batch. I just wonder if this will have any impact on them doing some more activity in the blu-ray world, or it's just a total fluke.

The reason is extremely simple. With the release of the new Godzilla film earlier this year and the coming blu ray release Sony are trying to capitalize any way they can off of it. Releasing these titles this year guarantees that Sony sees money from them whether it be fans of the movies that will buy them no matter what, people that see the new movie and get that nostalgic kick and will impulse buy, or people that viewed the new movie and want to check out some of the older titles Sony knows they will sell.

Im getting them anyway - these should be the complete versions of the Godzilla movies.. and to finally get Rebirth of Mothra III - too sweet !!
I assume the PQ and AQ will be more along the lines of the same, which doesn't bother me either really cause I love these films like you say. So, I expect they will all be great and Rebirth of Mothra III is an awesome plus!

Well I know it relates to the new movie, but they've also passed at some other movies in their catalog that could have released with similar circumstances.

I just don't get what make them go all-in on a bunch of obscure Godzilla movies. Sure, there is probably a cult market for them - as well as people in curious from seeing the new movie. But relative to Sony releasing NOTHING else on blu-ray - it still seems weird to me to put out a veritable flood of Godzilla on blu-ray.

Glad about Godzilla 2000, but I want Godzilla (1985) the most out of any Godzilla movie!

I think it partly has to do with the current retail environment. I'm positive Sony planned a wide release of Fright Night to benefit from the remake. They wouldn't invest in a 4K scan/remastering if they weren't. But they likely got word from retailers that they'd only want 1 or 2 copies per store, if not less. So they shelved it, and offered it to TT instead, which they probably made more money off of than they would in a wide release. This for sure happened with Sleepless in Seattle too. I think it's more likely that retailers saw more potential in stocking these Godzilla movies, than many other Sony catalog ones. Godzilla has always been a popular franchise, and will continually sell year after year, but the same can't be said for many catalog titles.

Tie-ins make all the difference. Hence holding catalog titles until a remake or reboot comes out, because it's essentially free advertising. Not to mention, most are 2 films per, so that's less SKUs, less cover art to produce, less shipping costs than if they were all individual releases.

I picked up all the Godzilla films so far when they hit $8... I doubt Sony is making a huge profit off them, especially at the MSRP they are charging. It COULD be part of their agreement with Toho that they can't mine them out to a 3rd party - that's speculation, but Toho is very careful with its one franchise and maybe Sony has to be the studio to release them. Who knows... I'm just glad they are coming out.

My understanding is that (in general ) Sony was disappointed in Blu-ray sales for catalog titles so they were rather sub-license home video rights and keep their own focus on newer titles.

As for Godzilla, Sony wanted capitalize on the release of the new Warner Bros GODZILLA movie.

Years ago, a friend at SPHE described the Godzilla films as "evergreen" releases that don't sell huge numbers all at once, but sell steadily month after month, year after year. The May Blu-ray releases sold well enough for Sony to do their remaining Godzilla titles, and the company expects that these BDs to have a long market life.

BTW, did Sony lose the US home video rights to "Son of Godzilla?" Both the decade-plus old Sony US and Toho Japanese dvds feature a very nice quality print and it would be nice to see a US BD release.

Yep along with Hedorah, Sea Monster, Gigan, and Mechagodzilla. Since the former 3 were released by Kraken it is believed that they also have Son and Mecha.

I believe Keith explained to me that another company has picked up the rights to Son of Godzilla and G vs. MechaG and there will be an announcement later this year.
