Though he made only a handful of films, director, writer, and actor Jacques Tati ranks among the most beloved of all cinematic geniuses. With a background in music hall and mime performance, Tati steadily built an ever more ambitious movie career that ultimately raised sight-gag comedy to the level of high art. In the surrogate character of the sweet and bumbling, eternally umbrella-toting and pipe-smoking Monsieur Hulot, Tati invented a charming symbol of humanity lost in a constantly modernizing modern age. This set gathers his six hilarious features—Jour de fête, Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday, Mon oncle, PlayTime, Trafic, and Parade—along with seven delightful Tati-related short films.

I'm going with the Halloween-wishlist idea of Haxan, though--Saw that on Hulu, and I can say it's definitely not what you're expecting the movie to be.

Ohhh yah. "Arthouse 70's" (back in the days when you were either Disney or "alternative") would cover it.
Not disturbing/surreal, like most of the other Richard Williams pests of the time, just too hyperrealistic considering Richard Adams' battle-of-nature bestseller--Think closer to the dreary British art-animation of "When the Wind Blows". (And we've already had twenty years of "Twisted childhood" jokes on the Net showing the often bloody tooth-and-paw battles between the "cute bunnies". Take it from a former rabbit owner, they're not all Thumper.)
I was a fan of the book when it came out, and remember liking the movie, and...now I can't remember why.

It came out from an indie label in theaters and was picked up by MGM, so it's probably Criterion territory.
Insert "Oo, oo, I want Plague Dogs too, just to show off! " post in 3-2-1... despite that one making Watership Down look like Secret of NIMH by comparison.

It's like one of those prints you have sort of defocus your eyes to see. They just **** some people up

At first, I thought that The Vanishing artwork was one of those screwy 1990s-fad drawings that people like me who have lazy eye cannot see. When I followed this thread advice and looked from a distance, though, I got it.

Wow. Just wow. This may be the coolest Criterion cover art of the year. Or ever.
