I would imagine its intentional because its supposed to look a little 'old' in my opinion. Imagine if the movie was super sharp, grain free, and bright colors. You'd think the battle of Iwo Jima took place last year

Saw them theatrically, it is the intended look.

Just grainy & gritty. Not warm and inviting. Also helps keep the gore "acceptable" (no bright red blood & guts).

I just watched Flags on regular DVD. I have downloaded the trailer for Letters on the PS3. Some of the footage is the same for both movies, so you get a good comparison. A nice example: at 27:18 minute-mark in Flags, the start of the beach landing is taking place. You will see a number of amphibious vehicles and landing craft, w/ the beach on the right side of the screen. That same shot is in the Letters trailer. I compared the two, and there is quite a bit of difference.

As for the colors, with all the movies out now that use color filters and other enhancements, this might just look more normal. The colors do seem a bit muted, but I will definitely be buying both of these the day they're out.

Trailers often don't feature the same color values as the final film due to trailers being made while post production is taking place.
This is true for practically every trailer ever released. Compare the trailers included on DVDs to the main feature and you'll notice this.

Yes, you're right. But normally the trailers look 'normal' while the end-master is the processed one. And since the trailers look really processed the assumption that the films look the same is legit, don't you think ?

I think it still gives a basis for comparison. Not an end-all example, but it lets you see the increase in definition, at least. Plus, even if the trailer isn't processed, it still looks damn good.

I'm not sure which trailer you saw, but I thought it looked rather weak; not just for the colors, but the resolution was far from astonishing.

Quicktime for PC also has whacked-up gamma for some strange reason.

I downloaded for the PS3 from the PS store. The colors do look very muted, but when I compared the two beach scenes I spoke of earlier, I saw an appreciable increase in the detail of the picture.

I just got this in the mail. Ordered it from Warner Bros Store and got it a week early. Pretty thrilled.

it's a great movie for those you wondering. Can't attest to PQ/AQ because I don't have it yet on BR.

I'm wondering the same. I was going to buy Iwo Jima and flags of our fathers and Apocalypto but opted to rent them from netflix first.

Wish I could help you but I'm in the same boat. I hear very good things about it though. Hopefully some folks on here can provide us with some reviews.

By the time I watch it, there will probably be plenty of reviews out there.

I haven't cracked this one open, yet, but it is great to see a TrueHD track on a BD from Warner Bros.
