I didnt say i needed it. I love my blus!!!! I dont have a projector (yet), but i do view on a 70 incher and detail is phenomenal. If 4k is the future though, then why not release the best viewing experience possible? That would be a 4k optical disc format, not streaming!!

I think you must have a pretty good upconverter to say a DVD is stunning. I've seen good DVD's (like CGI based movies like Toy Story, etc) but for me DVD is not very good. All DVD's look flat to me. I view on the PS3 on the 50" Pioneer plasma.

I agree with you that it's hard to imagine anyone repurchasing their whole library again in 4k. Maybe just the obnoxiously rich. |

To be honest we've been short changed on DVD for years now. Even if the picture doesn't have lots of EE, it's usually very poorly downconverted from the HD master (leading to lots of aliasing) or it's badly compressed (or it's affected by all three!). But the DVD of ZDT has none of those problems, and it's spectacular as a result. Is it as good as HD? No, but it's not far off. Now, I'm not leading some sort of DVD evangelism movement here, 'cause I loves my Blu-rays. But it proves that with a good enough source, upscaling can be very, very effective, whether it be DVD to HD, HD to UHD and so on. I view on the Oppo 95 on the 55" Sony 4K. ![]() Enough is enough. Even my purchasing of Blu-ray as drop quite a lot in the last 24 months. Unlike others here, Blu-ray was not my first BBQ. Buying movies for me goes back to Betamax and the late 80's and 90's with VHS and Laserdisc to the crazy years of DVD. I bought over the last 30 years roughly 30 Betamax 150+ Laserdiscs 400+ VHS 1500+ DVD Now reaching almost 500 Blu-ray. I am reaching my 50's and frankly I have no more interest in buying these yet again. I gave enough to Hollywood and the world of cinema in the last 30 years ![]() |

Its like, I don't feel like doing it all over again. We worked hard getting the collection we have a few times already. And by "hard" I mean, researching which version/which region of this title to get... which import to get of that title... And some might say, "Well just as you enjoyed collecting through the different physical mediums (VHD, LASER DISC, DVD, BLU), the youth of today will too". But to that I say, well, the youth is not being raised on physical media. They're being prepped for a YouTube/Smartphone/Streaming world. They're not going to feel that excitement of picking up that movie on release day and holding it in their hand. We're the last of those days |

Blu-Ray is still going strong, but lets face it we are getting volumes of DVD-era dumps at this point. Actual 4K restorations are still relatively rare, actually EXTREMELY rare from some studios (seems to mostly be FOX and Sony that have vaults full of 4K restorations, not sure wtf Warner, MGM, and FOX are doing with the majority of their catalogs). Of course I will consider 4K restorations for any film that got a "mediocre" blu-ray - I'll just have to look on a case by case basis to see how substantial the upgrade is. |

No, I don't buy it either. People will always want to actually own things they love, I don't care what anyone says. It's human nature. The studios may want it the other way but that's too bad.

kids have ALWAYS thought that way. when we were kids we wanted walkmans and a discman... we never cared about speakers, receivers etc.. same with movies, we got whatever was cheap... as the person matures, their tastes and habits mature as well.
