Well, jayembee, if you ever find treatment for your malady, let me know because I am occasionally surprised by some peoples opinions as well. Silly me.

Good stuff. I shoudn't even have to delve into the myriad ways that's totally nonsensical, but you're entitled to that most interesting reaction. Run with it, I say!
Really. So when you said "To me it seems sort of nonsensical at best and arrogant at worst (You don't share MY taste? How dare you) to be 'surprised' at a stranger's lack of enthusiasm/disdain for a film you happen to dig." you're not suggesting that it might be looked at as a personal attack? Seriously? Then what is the point of the "How dare you" part?

Of course, another point is that we're talking about films that are highly regarded and/or popular. It's not like we're talking about whether one likes a given Béla Tarr film. If someone says that they're not interested, or dislike, films that are as well-regarded and/or popular as, say, Gone with the Wind, Star Wars, or E.T., I don't think it's unreasonable to be surprised. In fact, I happen to not like any of those three films, and it would not strike me as nonsensical or bizarre or whatever adjective you choose that someone should be surprised at my saying so, whether I know them or not.

Also, in the case that started this whole tangent, we have a group of five titles (one being a 6-film set) that are so diverse, one would think that Clare would be interested in at least one of them. That she's not interested in any of them is a surprise, and I find it nonsensical that you think it would be nonsensical.

More specifics are needed here, I'd say. Like, is it your brother (familiarity/expectation) or a mysterious stranger in a trenchcoat (wildcard!)? Are you surprised by the mere fact they disagree with you on something, or by specific aspects of their viewpoint which you feel to be batshit crazy? Such details would help distinguish rational surprise from delusional nutcake surprise, methinks.

How about...random example that just popped into my head for no particular reason...somebody who regularly posts to the same Criterion Collection Discussion thread he frequents?

Where would somebody like that fall on the familiarity/wildcard continuum?

Hi blkhrt,

Yes, by Friday. I just need to push live two more titles (but there will be no delays).

Of course, I can think of over a dozen Criterion upgrades also.

And I agree completely with your choice of Lone Star. Need that one on blu now.
I am aware of the OotP archive release, no release date yet, so I'll probably wait to edit until the date is established. But, yeah, thanks for mentioning.

Oildude, I think I'm going to wish for a Bette Davis title or Court Jester or maybe For Whom the Bell Tolls this time but I'll definitely keep your recs in mind the next time I exert my influence .

Very much agree.

I'm particularly interested in

Ya Shagayu po Moskve (Walking the Streets of Moscow)
by Georgiy Daneljia (USSR, 1963, 78’, B&W)
restored by: Gosfilmofond

Though that seems like it might be a better fit for BFI.

Also thanks for the Demy reviews, incredibly excited about this release!

You are welcome, blkhrt. It is a fantastic release, quite possibly the best looking from Criterion this year.

You are welcome, TJS

I am really hoping that Artificial Eye can renegotiate No End and we see a Blu-ray release. Additionally, Todo modo has never had a good release in North America, so let's hope that Criterion would consider it.

You probably know that I am a big fan of Alberto Lattuada as well -- I have all but two of his films on DVD -- so hopefully another candidate for Criterion, possibly with Mafioso:

Lastly, I am hoping that the MOC guys will pick up Marco Ferreri's film. It is out in Italy, but there are no English-friendly releases of (any of) Ferreri's films anywhere yet. Criterion should also see if they can acquire La Grande bouffe, as I am fairly certain it is no longer with Lorber.

This is the Ferreri set, by the way, a beauty. I am fairly certain some of these films will never make it to Blu-ray, so if interested in Ferreri's work, it is probably a good idea to pick one up now.

Edit:

The Harem was also available before, but I believe it is now OOP. Excellent film with Carroll Baker. In Italy, there is also an English-friendly version of La Cagna/The B i t c h. Also, Tales of Ordinary Madness is available in a lot of different regions.

May I quickly point something out here? "Not interested" or "nothing for me this month" means, in terms of Criterion and whenever I mention a particular film here, I will not be buying. At $23 a pop for me in Canada is too expensive to buy unless I am very keen.

My Darling Clementine & La Dolce Vita are 2 films I have heard of and may watch one day, just that I will not be buying the Criterion version. My thoughts on Tati still stand though, wouldn't take that box set if it was free with $50 stuck to the side.

Sorry for any confusion

I have noticed that it is hit and miss regarding the Thanks button. One day it is there, after a refresh, gone.

EDIT - I can now no longer see the button

Thank you again as always
It's a great set, but I personally don't feel like L'Atalante is anywhere near one of the greatest films (as I continually see on lists) or even one of the best silent films. It's a nice little movie, and for its time it was pretty groundbreaking, but I'd take Sunrise, City Girl, even People On Sunday over it, as well as Passion of Joan of Arc.

You mean a limit on the number you can "thank" ? If so then mine is up the wall too as I only ever like 3-4 max a day

Watched Pickpocket today, liked it but didn't love it. Thought it had some interesting ideas but didn't really go anywhere for me. Here is my review.

I see a "thumbs up" button with the float-over caption "Thanks", which IIRC is different from the old "thanks" button. Perhaps you missed it? (Edit: You may also be looking at your own post; obviously they won't let you thank yourself. )

Back on topic: I recall reading elsewhere of a graphic in the Criterion newsletter which was interpreted as meaning It Happened One Night is coming to Criterion, but it's not in the latest announcement. (That just happened to coincide with AMPAS announcing the LA premiere of a new 4K restoration, presumably made for a BD release.) Any idea if & when that might happen?

Of course, another point is that we're talking about films that are highly regarded and/or popular. It's not like we're talking about whether one likes a given Béla Tarr film. If someone says that they're not interested, or dislike, films that are as well-regarded and/or popular as, say, Gone with the Wind, Star Wars, or E.T., I don't think it's unreasonable to be surprised. There's (obviously) nothing inherently personal about expressing an opposing view, but interpretation is another matter. Yes I do feel in a worst case scenario an opposing view *could* be irrationally interpreted as a personal affront, though I'm not accusing you of that and it's not what I meant with "...How dare you". That was actually just to illustrate the delusional presumption behind the (potential) arrogance component I mentioned - that one's own view is the norm/sensible and a divergent one is a flawed anomaly warranting "surprise". But my fault on poorly chosen phrasing there.

Anyway I otherwise maintain what Ive said, that I find surprise irrational outside of knowledge/familiarity fueling expectation. And personally, awareness of mass popularity/high regard wouldn't have any bearing. I don't operate under the default presumption the random guy next to me on the bus digs The Exorcist just because it's highly regarded in some circles. Surprise would only enter the equation if he went on and on about his affinity for the demonic possession subgenre only to drop the bombshell he can't stand the granddaddy of demonic possession flicks. But perhaps I'm just an odd duck.

Re: all this about dearest Clare not caring about any of 10 upcoming films, seems a little scant and vague to warrant surprise, unless Clare has droned incessently about loving one or more of the directors/writers/actors represented, but that's me. Anyhow this is the last I'll say on it since this is clearly way off course of thread intent (thank god! Right?)
