I generally don't disdain to comment in threads like this, but I felt compelled to offer my perspective. I can understand the misgivings that people have regarding having paid a premium for this release based upon its (alleged) limited availability. Paying $80 for a blu-ray, no matter how rare, would likely make even the most prodigal of consumers balk, especially when considering that niche labels like Criterion put out releases with just as much care, an equal or greater number of extras, along with booklets containing informative essays, premium packaging, and rarely does the MSRP of their blu-rays exceed $40 (and I, as well as many others, have never once paid MSRP for a Criterion release). Moreover, Criterion isn't plaqued with some of the quality control/compression issues that Shout Factory is frequently vilified for. All that aside, the positive aspect of the demonstrable demand for a fairly obscure catalogue title (one that was a box office failure, no less) is that it sends a clear message to the studios and rights holders of these films that there is in fact a demand for physical media. Whether collectors like those who frequent these forums want to face it or not, the widespread availability and capability to stream media on demand has fundamentally changed the business model for making media available to consumers. Compounding this the economy has encouraged studios to be much more skeptical regarding releasing deep back catalogue titles, even those with a seemingly certain demographic. Gone are the halcyon days when bands were given enormous signing advances prior to releasing (or even recording) an album; now one need only release a handful of YouTube videos covering someone else's songs, or be a runner-up thrice removed on American Idol, and provided you have some modicum of talent and/or somehow capture the attention of the listening public, you get to bypass the years of playing in clubs, etc, slowly gaining a following (which is why an artist like Morrissey [criminally] didn't have a major label distribution deal from something like 1997-2004). So, for all of the varied reasons people collect these releases, whether it be the rarity, the packaging, the fact it has a slipcover, or whatever, I'm just glad they're buying. And just to clarify, I too find it odd that people collect steelbooks or special/limited editions independently of enjoying the film itself, in much the same way that I'm incredulous when grown men collect toys, or spend hours playing videogames, or indulge in any number of hobbies or interests I don't personally share. And I'm confident many people would find my interests equally tedious or peculiar. At the end of the day, who cares. The interest from consumers benefits all of us in the long run. I, for one, don't want to be confined to purchasing sure-thing blockbusters like Transformers and The Fast and the Furious because the studios are too squeamish to take a chance on a more esoteric or less known film. Finally, apropos of the high price of this release, while I feel it's a little too high for what we're getting, I certainly don't think these labels are going to release films solely out of magnanimity. The bottom line is, if they don't turn a profit, they won't release the films (don't get me wrong; I'd love to see Shout lower the price on my pre-order, though I'm not holding my breath).

I hardly ever pre-order a Blu-ray as I like to see reviews first before I buy, but I did in this case as I knew that it would sell out before it's release date.
I will still keep my pre-order, but may end up canceling down the road if it looks like it will be readily available after 10/28. |

I pre-ordered the Limited Edition at DVDpacific.com (it was after it sold out on Amazon.com and before Shout Factory announced they would made 10,000 copies avalaible). Do you think I should cancell my pre-order at Pacific and pre-order it at Shout Factory to be sure to get a copy? DVDpacific wrote me they were unable to guarantee I could get a copy.
I'd be sure to get a copy if I order on Shout Factory website, but it's more expensive and I don't know if they take international orders (I live in France). What do you think I should do? |

I have a feeling I'm gonna miss out on this one either way. Laptop crapped out and I have to buy another for school next month there goes my bluray budget for the next couple months. #HorrorFanProblems
Sucks especially because that crappy feeling we as collectors tend to get when we read an announcement that something we missed out on is Sold Out, yep. Gonna feel that twice. I just hope I can get my hands on it before its completely gone. This might be THE must-have of the year! |

Now what I really want is for Shout to up the amount of signed Werner Herzog collections from 100 to 200. C'mon shout, fair is fair. Or is that one OK to allow scalpers to go hog wild on? |

Personally I don't care if its limited or not I just wanted the theatrical version as well at the DC.
I'm a collector of movies I want to own and enjoy. Not so I can admire my purchase as being rare and worth a lot until the next release comes out and it becomes worthless. Again just cancel your preorder and move on if you feel its not worth $80.00 for a 10,000 copy run. Funny thing is that if they originally said 10,000 limited no one would be complaining about this and would have still ordered it. LOL @ this release not feeling 'special' anymore because they released 5000 more or feeling 'cheated' by ShoutFactory. This thread is hilarious. |

The price tracker price is the Best Buy price at $69.99. It says not available at Amazon still so it uses the Best Buy price.

That's the thing with limited editions; people, even big fans, occasionally miss out. It sucks. But then it's the nature of the beast. Users should direct their ire at companies that do it if it sits uneasy with them, not other users. SF set this up; I think buyers are justified to feel aggrieved if they want after buying in to the initial set-up. Once again, a small matter but SF should probably strip the numbering off of these. Who really cares if they have Nightbreed #9,232. I also agree that it's going to be harder to believe SF when it comes to other limited editions. I also think its good for the fans of the film. Since there are 8 billion people on Earth changing the limited edition from 5000 to 10000 doesn't really seem so bad. Whatever ones take on this is, at the end of the day the result is it will be 10000 blu rays and there is a collectors edition for those who don't want the limited version.
