OR

Stop reading tea leaves and judge films as art as we see them. That way we won't have to waste our lives on the internet doing the most futile and pointless exercises of our mental capacity.

The majority of people who see comic book movies don't read the comics. So the general audience doesn't know and doesn't care whether or not the pretty girl in the movie is familiar with the source material.

It's not a huge deal if an actor isn't familiar with the comics. Here's excerpts from an article about Guardians of the Galaxy, which looks great:
Quote:
Chris Pratt read some of the newest Brian Bendis comics prior to meeting with James Gunn. The director told Chris to stop reading and ordered him not to read any more of the comics because he [said] they are not recreating the comics.

Karen Gillan read the Infinity Gauntlet before she got her hands on the script.

Zoe Saldana didn’t read any of the comics before or after getting hired for the project. She also didn’t research Star Trek when she got hired for that film. Saldana didn’t want to imitate anything or feel restricted. She feels that her role is conceiving and finding the character is her job. For the role, Saldana studied bullfighters because she was fascinated with the dance of convincing a bull to run into its own death. She also thinks it’s important to have grace as a woman.

I think issue can be taken with Mara's comments because she made it sound like the production wasn't going to be based on the 50+ years of comics history.

Ideally, if the screenwriter has done their job correctly, the actors don't have to read the comics. Because the character in the screenplay should be faithful to the comic book character, for the most part. So, an actor can give a faithful portrayal of that character without having read the comics. (Especially if the director is familiar with the material). I don't expect every actor to read 50+ years of comics to play a character. They're actors. If they're a fan, great. If not, you can still do a great job playing the character. I doubt Gary Oldman studied Batman comics religiously, and he was a fantastic Gordon.

It's great that Andrew Garfield is a genuine Spider-Man fan and has been since he was a little kid. But it's not required. I don't know if Chris Evans read the comics, but would anyone say his portrayal of Cap isn't great if he hasn't?

I do think that an actor should check out the comics and their character once they have the role. It definitely doesn't hurt, and they as an actor can still do their own thing. (It's probably also a good idea to be on the fans' good sides and not make it sound like you don't give a crap about the material that you will be portraying on screen.)

No one expects her to be a walking encyclopedia of Susan Storm knowledge, but why not take the initiative to grab some comics and see what this Sue Storm woman is all about? Reading the comics isn't always necessary - it wouldn't have helped Dunst in the Raimi Spider-Man movies, because her MJ wasn't like the MJ from the comics - but it doesn't hurt to be familiar with the character you're playing.

I'm not going to harp on Kate Mara not being a comic book fan --- Who cares about that as long as she respects them while playing in a movie about one?

But if Trank doesn't respect comics other than as a source of name and concept to appropriate and change into his own thing, well... that's where the concern should be by every fan.

You gotta admit, running the tea leaves through Google translate was a nice touch.

You don't see that every day.

I haven't looked at this thread in awhile but I see it continues to be dominated by the usual suspects who get off on trashing this movie online. Any scrap of information they can find arouses their hatred and tantalizes their rage, continuing to gratifyingly reenforce their belief - no, their foreknowledge - that this will suck. After all, waiting to see how it turns out is a fool's errand and borderline troll behavior because when you're so convinced you're right, you want everyone else to be wrong.

I'm sure it's very erotic in its own way but after 63 pages it seems more than a little masturbatory.

Don't we all?

Point being, everything regarding this film points to it being exceptionally lacking. Could it be great? It could, because there is a statistical percentage that would allow for it. It just happens to sound like a very small percentage.

After all, I went into Troll 2 expecting it to be positively horrible and I personally love it.

Don't you see? People like myself, Bolty, and others who keep coming here and keep commenting with such disdain only do so because we are actually passionate fans of the Fantastic Four. We comment negatively on what little news that leaks about this movie, because none of it sounds good to us. We don't want a crap movie, we want a good one, and nothing about it so far sounds good or has given us any hope. I'll continue to defend Fox and their X-Men movies, but this is their second shot with FF and it sounds even worse than their first shot.

I understand and respect that but posting the same hateful remarks over and over and over and over will not have any effect on this movie's outcome (and I agree it may very well be a trainwreck) so I can only assume you guys continue to do so because it provides some sort of catharsis for your frustration.

Michael B. Jordan Says ‘Fantastic Four’ Is Changing On The Fly

Director Josh Trank and the Fantastic Four have been quietly filming their big Marvel movie in Louisiana for the past few months. I say “quietly” for two reasons. One, we haven’t seen a lot of set photos of the stars in costume or anything. And two, co-star Michael B. Jordan agrees. In a new interview with MTV, the actor talked about filming the movie as being in “our own world.” He also talked about how Trank is changing the movie on the fly and that it’s less about superheroes and more about people learning to live with their disabilities.

As for that quiet, it’s probably going to end next week. The new Entertainment Weekly strongly suggests the full Fantastic Four cast will be at Comic-Con. Below, read the Michael B Jordan Fantastic Four quotes.

MTV talked to Jordan about a Sprite Films project he’s working on but, of course, talk turned to the movie he’s currently filming.

First up, they asked about the secrecy:

Quote:
Yeah, we have been pretty much in our own world, that’s really the only way we could get a project like this done. It is so massive, so many moving parts, so many moving pieces, things are changing every day.

The script is evolving, [you make] on set decisions on the fly, things are always constantly changing. Me personally, I block out that extra noise and I focus on the job I have to do. It is an important film for all of us… We’re taking it seriously, taking a lot of risks. I think it’s going to pay off.
They followed up, correctly saying most of us assume movies of this size are planned well in advance.

Quote:
As much as everybody thinks that these projects are cemented in years before, they’re not. There’s so many things that you just can’t account for. You know, you can try and plan as much as you want, but you get there on game day and you get thrown a curve ball, I guess, hey, the game plan goes out the window. You’ve got to adapt.

Josh’s vision is very clear and he knows exactly what he wants, and he gives us room to adapt and to play. That’s what I kind of think sets us apart, is that this is going to be grounded and unconventional.

It’s not your typical superhero film, you know, we aren’t looking at this as like, being superheroes. We’re more or less a bunch of kids that had an accident and we have disabilities now that we have to cope with, and try to find a life afterwards – try to be as normal as we can.
Next, Jordan was asked if the film was in the tone of the Golden Age films or more angsty:

Quote:
Yeah, I mean we’ve just got layers. We’re trying to make it relatable to people as much as we can [with these] larger than life, larger than this world themes.

It’s superheroes! You know, not just superheroes. It’s fiction. You’ve got to ground it as much as you can to make [audience members] feel relatable to these characters, no matter what age they are or what time of their life.

One of the good things about the Fantastic Four is that everybody is different. And it’s like, sometimes family doesn’t always consist of your relatives or by blood. Sometimes your best friends can feel more like family than your cousins.

I think everybody kind of has that same feeling. When you go through an accident together, when you go through a traumatic event, sometimes that brings you closer together. Yeah, everybody takes their time out to kind of deal with their own stuff, but at the end of the day, you shared a common experience together that you’re able to relate to.

The people, the public, the fans that are watching this can all relate to that because everybody has had to overcome an obstacle in their life before.
Really, really interesting stuff from the actor, who is playing the Human Torch. You can read more of his interview at the above link.

As for Comic-Con, in addition to some online rumors, the new EW has a write up on Jamie Bell about his role in the Fantastic Four as The Thing. It’s in a section called “Breaking Geek” of actors who are “about to earn a permanent place in Hall H.” Not a confirmation, but a pretty big clue.

Well, it's hard not to see it as anything but. The way the cast has talked about this film hasn't been all that flattering...Every core piece of information seems off. I want to see a good movie, but it honestly doesn't feel like this will be a good movie. I reserve judgement until I see it, of course, but so far, I'm more cautious than optimistic...

oh boy... this is going to be "interesting" to say the least. it seems like Trank has really missed the tone and feel of the comics by a LARGE margin... living with disabilities? besides Ben nobody in the ENTIRE series thought they were disabled

I honestly don't mind if people see it as the worst thing ever. My point all along has been 1) no need to say the same thing a dozen times until the next piece of news comes along and 2) people who are waiting to see what happens are not morons.
