All Aboard!!!!!!
I'm not so sure that there will be a "next format." DVD is still a force, and the mass audiences have moved towards streaming, which unfortunately is the future. I love Blu-ray, but any physical media format that may arrive in the future is going to be even more of a niche market than Blu-ray currently is. Hate to say it, but the vast majority of these catalog releases we are seeing will probably never again see the light of day on physical media.

people who say streaming is the future obviously have found a way to solve the bandwidth problem the U.S. has

I'm not even talking about that. with horrible compression and only a FRACTION of the U.S. using it, Netflix is using about 30% of the available bandwidth of the ENTIRE U.S. infrastructure as it is. think of what happens when you dump the rest of the mainstream public on streaming. catastrophic failure. they don't have the backbone in place to support such an endeaver. check out the rest of the world, the U.S. is the ONLY major first world country where this whole "stream everything!" mentality is taking hold, the rest of the world has caps, or just doesn't care. look at Canada, Australia, U.K. etc... 60 gig caps with huge overage charges. no one wants to have a $500 net bill because they stream. people watch their bandwidth like hawks and they have no desire to compound the problem with mass streaming.

Exactly. I am the only one of my friends and family that has a DVD/Blu-ray library anymore. They all stream, and couldn't care about the picture quality, etc. I personally don't get it, but I'm not blind to see that I, and other Blu-ray nuts like me, have become the exception, not the rule.

Personally, I would LOVE a 4K physical home video format, but given Sony recently hyping it up then brushing it under the rug shortly after, I wonder if it'll ever come to fruition. If it does, I will be double dipping as I want the best presentation possible. If it doesn't, I guess the positive is that I save a lot of money.

Most likely the same people who seem to think that watching a movie on a friggin' phone is desirable.

It's hard to imagine there not being a 4K format on some level. People still buy NEW releases, and will do so with 4K in great enough numbers for some new format to exist. This will surely also apply for AAA catalog releases like Star Wars, Mission Impossible, Avatar, etc. Yeah, the days of million unit sellers might be going away, but there will still be a market of some size.

However it's crazy to assume that some of the more obscure catalog titles will appear on 4K, especially those with spotty records on home video. No doubt, blu-ray is the last stop for many of them. I would definitely agree with you there. I think there will be some catalog, including some titles we might not expect. But like the blu-ray universe is merely a slice of DVD, 4K will probably only have a slice of what was on blu-ray.

I agree. There is also a huge consumer electronics industry that needs the next big thing (i.e. 4K) as a sales driver for TV sets, receivers, disc players, etc. and there is not much incentive for people to buy or upgrade without content.

If authoring costs for 4K come down enough, I could see the boutique studios of this world like TT bringing out "obscure" titles just like they do now - as long as there are 4K masters available, and this seems to be becoming more common. Like Journey To The Center of the Earth...if there was such a thing as a 4K BD standard Fox/TT could bring a 4K version out tomorrow.

But yeah, maybe 4K will end up like the laserdisc-niche-expensive product at the pointy end of the market. Which would be fine for me, I'd be happy to buy 4K versions of Lawrence of Arabia, 2001 and the like, and leave the lesser titles to BD 2K.

It's always about convenience. If they're watching a movie on their phone sitting on the couch because they couldn't find the remote to the TV, well that's something different than firing something up on a bus or train...

I've watched movies on my iPhone, iPad, etc. Does it trump the theater or my home theater? No. But the story is still the story, just smaller. Did people say the same thing using a 13" TV as opposed to going to a majestic theater in the 60s or 70s? Probably.

I'll also wager that if it's a movie I've seen at least once before, then the impact isn't dimished at all.

Has anyone thought of compiling a list of which TT releases are available in other regions? It might be helpful when a title is close to selling out/sells out.

I was unaware of this thread, apparently it's in the no-man's land of the generic "international" forum.

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=239285

I'm sorta disappointed they're re-releasing Journey to the Center of the Earth considering that one's available elsewhere and is cheap, here's hoping someone else releases Mysterious Island (if it turns out the fourth title is "The Big Heat").
