Default Black levels on Blu-ray

Why can't blu-ray discs get that right? It's kind of dissapointing.

I blame my television. I don't have black bars, I have dark gray bars, I think someone's been watching too much AvP: Requiem.

black levels and black bars are different things. I think it is not a problem with the format, as many of them have good black levels, but a problem with studios. They just miss it sometimes. I am overall happy with it on Blu-ray though, usually.

There's nothing wrong with the black levels in blu-ray movies. The problem is in your setup. Most likely it's your TV or the calibration (or lack) thereof.

I guess that means they will be remastering movies down the line so we can all go out and buy them again.

I hope, for example, that they look at Pan's Labyrinth again. The black levels seemed off to me in the beginning, and the DNR is awful!
But usually I see nothing wrong with the Black Levels on BD movies, they tend to be better than DVDs anywho.

We'd understand more if you mention specific discs you have problems with.

Exactly. If it's AVP: Requim, it's sadly supposed to look like that.

The filmmakers darkened the movie intentionally in post.

Nothing wrong with black levels in the vast majority of movies. It's most likely a display and/or calibration issue. I upgraded to an SXRD A3000 which has very good blacks for a digital display, but still don't match my previous CRT RPTV which displayed very deep blacks.

You should use Digital Video Essentials or the simpler calibration program on the Ratatouille disc

The only Blu I've seen so far where the black levels were poor was Layer Cake. All the others I've been pretty pleased with.
