Note that as far as I know, Suburbia has not even been released to regular DVD...
I absolutely loved SubUrbia. There's a great ensemble of young actors in there including Parker Posey and Giovanni Ribisi. I'm still amazed this wasn't released on DVD, much less Blu-ray! I don't even know where my vcr is anymore so watching this on VHS would be sad. I guess there's a digital copy somewhere out there on the interwebs.

They would still be great on Criterion though.
Even though Orson Welles is a weaker film in his filmography, would still be a nice inclusion.
I totally forgot about Bad News Bears! Weird movie...

I had no idea Newton Boys was on Blu-ray. I ended up getting a used DVD copy a couple of weeks ago. It's just as well, as the film is really interesting only to see Linklater work out how to tell a plot-based story.

I'm still confused (and perhaps dazed) that the first 2/3 of the Before trilogy are DVD only.

I'm hoping for Suburbia on Blu one day. I lived down the block from where it was being filmed in South Austin, and would frequently walk pass the shoot to and from work. The convenience store they used (and redressed as Circle-A) became a day labor place a couple of years later.

I was thinking more on the me not having unlimited income and buying two copies of the same film seems pretty frivolous. But yeah probably ridicule plays a large part as well

I wish it was that criterion released it on bluray but I think it's with alliance films.
Speaking of Samurai... I watched the first 2 films of the Samurai Trilogy on Saturday (on Hulu - deciding on future purchases). I was planning to watch the final film on Sunday, but my internet went out. I'm not sure what happened, but my modem just got stubborn. Now for some reason it's working again, but I now have to find the right time to watch the film. Just a little example of why I prefer physical media overall.
As far as the films go, I was very impressed. I've watched tons of Kurosawa and other Samurai films, but I thought Toshiro Mifune was excellent in these. I may have to pick them up in November's B&N sale.

Also speaking about Samurais, regarding Ghost Dog; The Way Of The Samurai. I forgot to mention how awesome the soundtrack was, very cool production by RZA. Also the scene with the thunderstorms was crazy powerful sound wise in the theater. It felt so real, I can only imagine if that was lossless 5.1 sound mix instead. Amazing.

School of Rock is a great movie too, I just didn't mention it because I figure there is no way in hell that Criterion would get that one, and I don't think it would really fit in with the collection. I think that everything in the collection so far has a place for whatever reason, but I just can't see School of Rock there. Same logic, I suppose, why I would never see, say, The Lion King, Forrest Gump, or The Godfather in there either. All amazing films, but hard to see in the Criterion Collection (even if there was a Christmas miracle and they got the rights).

I can't stand School of Rock, personally I think its a terrible film and should be removed from existence. Its is NOT Criterion material in any way :/

Maybe Waking Life or A Scanner Darkly could be added but thats at a stretch :/

Before I go too overboard with incredulity let's make sure I'm reading this right: You don't think The Godfather would fit in the collection?

not a surprise P considering you're on record as saying that you don't like rock music.

Yes, Surburbia was an interesting film; I like the fact that it all takes place during one night. I was in my 20's in the '90's, and though I couldn't really relate to the characters (hated going to convenience stores, so I definitely didn't like hanging out around them) the film does bring back memories of that era...

I was thinking the exact same thing. The incredulity, that is. The Godfather seems like a great fit to me, but we already have an excellent release.

I watched Scanners for the first time last night and that was a mind trip to say the least. I thought there would be more exploding heads but there was only just one and it was in the first act (sorry folks but that's not a spoiler). I have to admit, the premise is pretty intriguing, regarding people with telepathy and extra sensory perception. These are themes that I think about often. The acting was totally horrible but I knew this going in because its a B-horror movie. I love the surrealism though in Scanners and I was worried this was going to be a waste of a blind-buy, but in fact its superb popcorn entertainment (minus the popcorn, since I don't eat that stuff anymore). This was a totally entertaining Cronenberg flick. It's amazing how this director turned into a more refined filmmaker later in his career and started making more serious dramas, but directors always have to start somewhere.

Its a great film and I am glad it's in collection, it isn't perfect but its good and you have bonus of his first film in supplements which is nice. It's always nice to see how the director started off and comparing to how they are currently.

But yah its a great film if you are a fan of Cronengberg/Body horror.
