It's usually at midnight showings and marathon screenings where this stuff occurs. The giant group collective makes for a fun experience. The Avengers marathon a few years back had the crowd actually applauding, clapping, and cheering through all six films. So, it happens. But it's usually with a likeminded group of people at early screenings. I've never really encountered it at an every day screening.

I go to midnight showings all the time and I never see it never been to a marathon screening though

the only time I ever heard something like that was in episode I when R2 came on screen (you know when he was repairing that Blackbird fighter covered in Tin foil?)...there was a cheer for one or two seconds, but the rest of the movie was dead silent

I saw Episode I in 3D back in 2012, and the audience was pretty rowdy. When the logo came up, their cheering literally drowned out the sound of the music (to be fair, the volume was unusually low that day). When Darth Maul took out his double lightsaber, the whole theater gasped, when Qui-Gon died the whole theater yelled out "No!", quite loudly I should add. I mean, it doesn't always happen with every movie I see, but it's happened before.

I have to wonder at the age group and the mentality of the people to whom you spoke after the film. I'll hazard a guess it wasn't the age group at which the film was aimed. More likely a bunch of blokes my age who would perhaps have been better served by the ineffably dull Matrix films.

I remember when Episode 3 came out there was a woman dressed as Padme ala Episode 2 (white outfit.) She did a split all the way down low in front of a group of kids in the aisle.

Yes, I'm sure they were

Of course, it never occurred to you that episode two just shows how the good guys fail, turning to violence to defeat their enemy thus paving the way for Palpatine's rise to becoming the Emperor. There's the parallel to episode five right there: the bad guys win hands down.

As for Yoda needing the cane, do you need me to remind you of this dialogue: "Your eyes can deceive you, don't trust them." Apparently so

Yeah, I went with my uncle to see "The Dark Knight" for a midnight showing, and everyone was quiet for most of the first half. But when Batman used his motorcycle to turn over the Joker's truck, everyone breathed in...except for my uncle, who said out of nowhere, "Aw...poor Joker." Two-thirds of that audience erupted in laughter, myself included.

the best "laughter" moment in a theater I've ever had was watching that gawdawful film "Prometheus" where the snake thingy goes down the scientists throat... a guy a few seats to my right yelled out "DAAAAAAAAAAAMN! that boy took it like MAN!"... the whole audience just erupted.

In fairness, nobody actually said that. I think you got a bit carried away at they keyboard there, surely the only explanation for this: "engagining"

it's called hyperbole.. I'm saying I've never heard the audience simultaneously have ANY audible response to a film besides the odd person or two here or there. (well except for that momentary R2 cheer in ep 1 on opening night, but that was all of two seconds and only once in the whole film and MAYBE half the audience)

Funny..the original Star Wars films were not "aimed" at kids. They were for adults really (a homage to movie theater serials from long ago), at least until Lucas got the bright idea of trying to market more for kids with "ROTJ".

Thanks for the warning; I tend to avoid films like that.

Another big laugh in a theater was one I actually triggered myself by accident. I was 17, and my family went to see "Titanic". During the scene where Jack shows Rose his sketches, there's a closeup of one woman lying down with her arm behind her head. I immediately said, "hey, its Sandra Bullock!" I guess lots of others saw the resemblance too, because they started laughing. Meanwhile, my mother was telling me to shut up.

lol, that's awesome. the only I ever did myself was watching "Bullet to the Head". there's a scene where someone mentions bringing Stallone in because it's the law... Stallone just looks at the guy and says "The Law?!" and I just belt out "I AM the LAW!!" there was a bunch of older 40 years olds who must have grown up with Stallone cuz they almost fell out of their seats

Yes, one of the best moments of SW history!
Thanks for the reminder.

With all the prequel bashing in this thread, I sometimes forget how awesome SW (yes all 6 movies).

I saw opening weekend audiences go batshit when Yoda started flipping around -- it wasn't a roar of approval, they were shocked and surprised. OMG WUT M I S33ING? AAAAAAH!

As for anecdotal post-screening stories, overheard two guys walking out, one turned to the other and said, "I am haunted by the kiss you should never have given me? Who the **** talks like this?"

The moment did, however, lead to a second week ad buy from LucasFilm featuring Yoda fighting. "Who da man? Yoda man!"

Mark Hamill had the same reaction upon reading the first film's audition scene. Its part of Lucas' deliberately patterning the series after old serials. I find that most people who despise the PT outright usually don't understand that aspect of the series.
