The term "cult film" can be subjective. Here are the films I own on Blu-ray in which I consider to be "cult films":

Friday the 13th The Complete Collection
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)
John Carpenter's Halloween
Halloween II
Halloween III: Season of the Witch
Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers
Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers
Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers/Halloween H20: Twenty Years Later
Halloween: Resurrection
Maniac
Trick or Treat
The Evil Dead (1982)
Evil Dead II
The Monster Squad

Many horror films are cult films, but that doesn't mean that every horror film is a cult film, especially not a poorly received cash-grab remake.

A lot of these films being listed are not Cult films. Robocop? Lol

Cult films are movies with relatively small followings. That's usually because a large percentage of the general audience hasn't even heard of the damn film or films. It's not a matter of how well liked or hated it was by the GA.

I stopped reading at the B's when I didn't even see Brain Damage on the list.

Too many to list here. The most recent cult film on blu ray that I purchased is "Repo Man".

What is considered "cult", exactly? If you want to look through my collection and see, be my guest.

Ha. Robocop a "cult" film? I too think that's a stretch, a massive stretch. That was a a very popular and well known franchise in it's day, even had a reboot in 2014. Although to be fair, I think most people consider "Evil Dead" a cult franchise, and that one was pretty popular and also just had a reboot. But at least it started out with a massively low budget.

Of course I check rotten tomatoes and their list of cult films include "Badlands" and "The Deer Hunter". I guess my definition would be a little different.

From my collection, off the top of my head I would say something like "Frankenhooker" or "Though Shalt Not Kill... Except" are true cult films. Basically trashy films nobody has probably heard of, and likely just a small audience of supporters that insist they are great (i personally didn't really like these two, they were just ones I've watched recently). Basically most stuff released by Synapse, Blue Underground, Scream, and similar outfits are going to qualify as "cult films". When I think of cult films, I think Blaxploitation or 80's horror primarily, although it can cover other genres. However there's usually at last something a little bizarre about the film - so "cult" and "horror" often go hand in hand.

The 70s was the beginning of the trend of the cult film. The Rock Horror Picture Show, Pink Flamingoes, El Topo, Eraserhead and Harold and Maude are some of the key cult films from that era, but earlier films like The Night of the Hunter also became cult films in then. Sometimes films were huge financial hits, but were initially dismissed and than later rediscovered, like the films by Douglas Sirk. Some classics like Casablanca were also considered cult films because of quotable lines and because they got rediscovered.

I still have a collection of a series of reference books from the late 70s and 80s called Cult Movies by Danny Peary which consisted of critical essays on films which were considered as such.

[Show spoiler]
I loved those books by Danny Peary. He also put out another one called "Cult Movie Stars". I used to check those out from the library all the time, I learned a lot about great cult films from those books. He was one of the first critics to recognize the greatness of On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

Yeah, I would never refer to Robocop as a cult movie, but that's because I'm old enough to have been around when it was first released. Maybe younger people will consider it cult these days.

I have too many films considered cult to even begin to count, but the last few titles I purchased that I would call cult are:

Phantom of the Paradise (Shout Factory)
Streets of Fire (German Import)
Repo Man (Criterion)
Coonskin (German Import)

Originally, I'd say it was movies that developed hardcore followings from the fringes of society. Now it's really any (mostly genre) flick that wasn't big at the box office but becomes popular in some capacity

Putting it on a scale of 1-to-10 would be something like this (IMO, I'm sure I'll get someone's ire for this), going by the "size" of the cult

1-> The Big Lebowski
2-> Army of Darkness
3-> Rocky Horror Picture Show
4-> The Room
5-> Akira
6-> Bad Taste
7-> Pink Flamingos
8-> El Topo
9-> Nekromantik
10-> Something I've never heard of

So is a movie that your entire family is well versed in and enjoys, like The Big Lebowski or The Dark Crystal truly cult? I guess in some small sense

Yeah, thanks, that's rather obvious.

However The Big Lebowski is very much a cult film and so are several of David Cronenberg's early films
