If TLG does get announced for PS4 do you think it will entice a few more people to upgrade sooner?

Despite ongoing comments suggesting development of The Last Guardian is on hiatus, the title is currently being re-engineered by a "well-staffed" team at Sony, company head Shuhei Yoshida told GamesIndustry.biz during this year's TGS.

While Yoshida offered no hints regarding what in the long-silent development was specifically being re-engineered, he states Sony is waiting to re-introduce the game "in an appropriate way," said Yoshida.

"So, we're waiting for the right time to re-introduce The Last Guardian in an appropriate way," he said. "I can't... Well, the game is in development, and it's well staffed, and [Fumito] Ueda-san is here, working - even though he's not a Sony employee, he's dedicated to the product. But we're not ready to update yet."

Yoshida once again states the game has never been on hiatus, adding that its team of developers have "always been here."

"They're going through the re-engineering of the game, so the team size is smaller, because it's more engineering focused right now," he added.

Yoshida first commented on the game's suspected hiatus status in June following comments made by Sony Computer Entertainment of America CEO Jack Tretton. According to Yoshida, Tretton's comments were "misleading," saying the game is very much in active development.

"That hiatus term - I'm not a native English-speaking person - but that's misleading," Yoshida said. "The game is in active development. [Fumito] Ueda-san shared updates a few months ago. Nothing has changed. My answer is, 'Yes, the game is in active development.' It's not hiatus at all. But we are not ready to reintroduce it. When we are ready, we will do that. Please wait."

In August, Ueda stated that while The Last Guardian is still in development, titles including Knack and Puppeteer were taking precidence at SCE Japan Studio.

Anyone who's ahead of their times are crazy. Or so history have shown.

But this wouldn't be the first in the series to be reveal on a system before "re-engineering" onto another.

I remember Ico was shown for PS1, late in the game, before the move to PS2. (If my memories are correct)

Yes. They can have it also later on as an inpack once the PS4's get back in stock after the holidays.

Really looking forward to this for the atmosphere, creatures, scenery and architecture, as seen in the previous games Shadow of the Colossus and Ico, which I replayed when they came out for the PS3 HD 3D.

These games take a long time to develop for the small team, but so far, end up as classics. I still think back to exploring the giant plains of Colossus with the horse not far behind, on the hunt for glowing tails of the lizards.

Yeah, I think I no longer care. I like the team, but they must be one of the most horrifically mismanaged teams in the industry. 7 years we've been waiting and they have nothing to show; that's horrendous. The only games I can recall that have been in development hell for this long were all mediocre or worse: Duke Nukem Forever, Too Human, Final Fantasy XIII and Daikatana.

The main issue I have during all this is the media's incessant nature to always have "updates" that have no news at all. If they'd just leave it be until something is announced I'd be fine. I'm sick off all the "LAST GUARDIAN NEWS!" clickbait articles only to have them say the same thing. "We're working on it, nothing to show yet."

It is worthless talking about this game until actual PS4 gameplay is shown. Till then The Last Guardian is just a pet project by a few people at SCE.

UPDATE 17:15: It's worth bearing in mind that this isn't the first time a trademark for The Last Guardian has been abandoned. Back in 2012, a trademark for the game was abandoned after Sony failed to file a Statement of Use.

So what's going on? Has The Last Guardian really been abandoned? Hopefully Sony will be able to shed some more light on the situation later today.

UPDATE 2 17:44: According to an update on French site GameBlog.fr, Sony France has "categorically" stated that the game is still in development.

They could have easily just decided on a new name. Games been through YEARS of development and most likely a console switch. I'm guessing the games not going to look like the game we saw when it was first revealed.

Was wondering about this game last night. The wind hitting the feathers on the bird dog were great on the PS3 engine, if that was the PS3 it was running on.

Good points. Hopefully by 2016 it's in stores by some miracle. Not setting a definite deadline to hit is why its taking so long.

An administrative error in the handling of The Last Guardian's trademark has forced Sony, again, to issue reassurances that the game still is in development.

Sony, to GameSpot, Videogamer.com and others, confirmed that The Last Guardian remains in development by Team Ico. It was discovered this weekend that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office had listed Sony's trademark on The Last Guardian as abandoned because no one had answered a request to make a statement of the trademark's use or file an extension to do so.

VentureBeat noted that Sony has filed the trademark with an intent to use it, not as a trademark on an existing product. Sony was required to check in with the USPTO every six months over a span of three years, either to show it was using the trademark or make an extension. VentureBeat also noted that the Sony lawyer in charge of filing the trademark notice no longer is with the company.

The Last Guardian's development is led by Fumito Ueda, the designer behind the critically acclaimed Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. Sony has had to repeatedly deny the game's cancellation in the long span since the game's announcement at E3 2009.

At E3 2014, Shuhei Yoshida, the head of Sony's worldwide studios, reiterated that The Last Guardian was in development and, to squelch future rumors, said if the game ever was canceled Sony would make a formal announcement of that.

This game is probably going to fail, as much as I hate to say it. A game should never be in development for over 2 years. Because by the time all that time passes, the standards within gaming will be on another level.

Yep.

Most probably have a 3-4yrs dev time, between creative process (writing/ character design etc.) and finally beta testing.

A few franchises are annualized, sure, but they have

a) a known engine, generally in-house
b) a pretty big team working by "shifts" of sub-teams. Once a team is done, they start on the next iteration like clockwork.

Not to say that developping a game in 2 years can't be done, but it's probably more the exception outside of the big franchises.

As for TLG, its obvious that it hasn't been high on the priority list for SCEJ fo a long time, but I guess the transition from PS3 to PS4 was also painful (specially if the team working on it was, as hinted, small).
Let's hope that SCEJ put more resources behind the project after they releasd their other projects (Pupeteer, Knack...), and that 2015 will finally be -the- year.

My guess is either E3 2015 -most likely-, or TGS 2015.
