Saw it for a third time today.

At this point, I'd usually say something like "third time's the charm!", but I already loved the movie the first time.

Had Howard the Duck movie been released after a bunch of awesome comic book films (aka quality of the first two Donner Superman films), then maybe people would have been ready for a fun, bizarre hero like Howard the Duck.

Howard the Duck had all the great characteristics of its 1980s era to be successful - witty funny dialogue, Lucas and Tippett, amazing animatronics, the fun spirit of most 1980s adventure comedies, important roles for little people, and Leah Thompson (who would have been perfect had she been cast in a Jem film made in the 1980s). Just like many of the other charming fantasy films of the 1980s, Howard the Duck has aged well.

I always thought that Blade was the first good Marvel film, but I now realize it was Howard the Duck - and it seems obvious that Gunn respects the film as well.
People are putting a greater reason for his appearance....

When it's always been because James Gunn is a big fan of the character.

And I have always thought that the Howard the Duck film was severely underrated.

It could have used another script revision or two to bring it closer to the comics though.

Ninja Turtles:

Crazy to think Guardians climbs back to the top spot next week in its fourth weekend? Think I might go see it for the second time when I get a sec this week...

EDIT: Whoops, forgot about Sin City.

I feel like LOTR was more of a phenomenon than Avatar was.

You don't see kids running around playing Avatar on the playground, that's for sure.

It could have but when you look at scripts of these films from the 1980s, the fun cheese factor has more importance over the seriousness - the comic book/fantasy movie tone changed with Blade and X-Men.

Superman 1 and 2 could have been much more awesome had they too received a "post-2000 comic book screenwriting" revision. While that 80s cheese charm is quite entertaining, I still prefer this age of comic book screenwriting - I would love to see more directors like Gunn use Howard the Duck, Mister Mxyzpltk, Impossible Man, Bizarro - great comic book characters that can be adapted cinematically without it getting into ridiculous slapstick territory yet still remain fun. One of the reasons Guardians is so awesome is because it's not a film made up of dark disturbed characters, as was perfectly made fun of with the Batman "Darkness" song in The Lego Movie.

I'm being serious in the capacity that I personally didn't know the movie even existed until SDCC a few weeks ago. I'll concede that it's purely anecdotal.

Loaded choice of words, let me rephrase; I doubt kids these days are running around playing Avatar on the playground.

What I meant to get across is that Star Wars absolutely resonated with kids back when it was released. In comparison, do today's youth even care about Avatar? To call Avatar a new Star Wars is overlooking that while it may have made tons of box office money, its long term embracement in pop culture and fandom is virtually nonexistent.

In other words, people may pay hand-over-fist to see it in the theater, but they don't seem to care much about it beyond that.

I'm not sure how good you are at math but GotG dropping from 94 mil to 42 is a lot more than a 42% drop off.

42 is a lot less than half of 94.

But Bolty is correct. 94M to 42M is a 55% drop. (1st to 2nd week to week drop.)

That said, in Mike's defense, I'm pretty sure he just accidentally copied the 42 over from "$42 Mil" and has nothing to do with his math skills.

I got my GotG IMAX poster up . The 13 x 19 size of the print is a bit awkward, but I found a 16 x 20 frame in my house that I didn't even know I had, and I think it worked out well for it.. I was so excited to frame it, and put it on my wall that I didn't really position it perfectly, so I'll have to fine tune it later. I also got my Groot Pop vinyl bobble head in the mail today from Disney Movie Rewards
