Anyone within reasonable driving distance to Chicago might want to check this out - especially for the French line-up on Sunday, Aug 31st.

I've never seen Pépé Le Moko and Quai des Orfévres, but they sound great! A lot of other fun stuff, too.

That's a great lineup! Pépé Le Moko is pretty amazing. I've got the Criterion DVD around here somewhere.

Drunken Angel!

I'm not sure if you'll ever hear another person say this, but I think that's the best film Kurosawa ever made.

in a perfect world, I'd go three times - Friday for the newly restored print of the "lost" film, on Sunday for Pepe and the one after and then for Drunken Angel which I haven't seen.

2 films for $12. one ticket will get you in for a double feature - that film and the next one. pretty good.

EDIT: maely - it isn't super convenient for me to get there, but I have a feeling that if I get there for one, it'll be Drunken Angel!

Blast of Silence is one of my all time favorite films, and I would definitely consider this noir. Like the bleak winter setting, the voice-over, the story, and the
[Show spoiler]downer ending
...

I also like the fact that it bears a lot of similarities to the later Taxi Driver (another of my favorite films), though I'm not sure how much of this was intentional on Scorsese's part...

If you see Drunken Angel, then see Stray Dog on the same day. Stray Dog is my second favorite Akira Kurosawa film behind Seven Samurai.

Although Stray Dog and Drunken Angel are Kurosawa films set in Japan, they're still film noirs through and through.

Speaking of Pepe Le Moko...another Julien Duvivier film noir I highly recommend is Voici Le Temps Des Assassins (1956).
Also my 2 favourite French film noirs both by Edouardo Molinaro: Un Temoin Dans La Ville (1959) & Le Dos Au Mur (1958).

Stray Dog I have seen and I agree - noir through and through. I love the scene at the baseball game.

I still catching up on buying the older Blu releases. So yesterday I got The Enforcer and Force of Evil from amazon. I am going to save them for the weekend.

Seeing UK releases for Naked City and other great titles like The Killers is great (I am region free) but I wish Criterion would upgrade their DVD releases to blu esp Pickup on South Street!

Pickup on South Street is one of my most wanted titles, along with The Old Dark House and In a Lonely Place. Criterion, I'll buy 2 copies of each if it will help!
