I also took advantage of the Walmart Fathers Day Special Price of $348 plus a $100 online gift card. I sat on the fence long enough, waiting out the HiDef war going on between BD & HD.. I think I stepped in at the right time. Used the $100 gift card to buy 5 BD's and an hdmi cable.
I did research this purchase and weighed out the advantages of the 1500 to a PS3.. I already have a PS2 and an Xbox 360 not to mention a PS1 and a FamiCom nintendo console, so I really need another Game Platform like a hole in the head ![]() I really don't need a BD Player with HD Sound Decoding hardware, since my Onkyo will take care of these duties being capable of decoding TrueHD & DTS-HD (805) via hdmi. I like the fact that I can use one remote for the BD player and my Sammy LCD Television not to mention the fact that the cases match up nicely, with the black Lacquer look. I have read that this is one of the faster loading BD players and it has a crystal clear HiDef picture, so these reviews and reports have been very encouraging since the closest Ive come to hi-definition have been from video's downloaded from my Xbox 360 onto my 1080p lcd screen. I was wondering about the dvd upconversion properties of the 1500? Have many of you been satisfied with the results? How does it compare to some of the better upconversion players? I have an Oppo 981HD which I have been very happy with for the past year. Does the 1500 give the 981 a run for its money? I should have the 1500 hooked up by next weekend and will let you know about the results and will put it up head to head with the Oppo player, concerning SD upconversion playback.. It should be interesting.. |

I fixed the issue regarding the sound, but now I have another problem.
Each time I turn on the player, the tv screen shows the Samsung logo with the blue background for about 2 to 3 seconds with the upper left corner displaying, "720x1280". After the 3 seconds expires, the screen goes blank for another 2 to 3 seconds while the tv reads, "searching for signal". After this, the tv screen shows the Samsung logo again with the upper left corner displaying, "1080x1920". Is this normal for the player to flicker upon start up or is it the receiver that is causing this minor issue? |

Although mine doesn't show the actual resolution on screen, it does the same thing as it relates to the lost signal for the few seconds. That's what you call a "handshake" issue between the player and the TV through HDMI. It's the time it takes the player to lock in the signal to the TV. My 1200 and 1400 did it also. That's nothing to worry about. |

Thanks for the quick response. I have a silly question for you. Does it matter what device is turned on first, for example, tv, blu ray or receiver? I know with my old Yamaha dvd player, the manual specified that the tv had to be turned on first, then the receiver, then the player. It really didn't make sense to me.

To be honest with you, I really don't know. I will tell you this, I use the Harmony remote and I've got it programed to turn on the receiver, TV and BDP at the same time and It works fine for me. They may recommend this because of the handshake issue between the player and TV. Eventhough the BDP comes on at the same time, it obviously is still searching for the signal even after the other two components have locked in. I really can't see a problem though in what's turned on first. If someone else has any input on this they can follow-up.

With my Samsung TV monitor (HL-T5687S), it does not allow 24 fps, but when I choose the 24fps option in the Blu Ray menu of the BD-P1500, it allows me.
Then when I use my TV remote and click INFO, it reads 1080 x 1920 24Hrz. Does that mean that this blu-ray player forces this picture on my monitor? Is there any way to test this? |

Maybe it's time you moved on and started looking on the horizon for something different. Or, you can continue to "beat your head against a wall" and choose to continue too complain. I don't know why you'd choose the latter, but you are who you are and maybe this is what you enjoy. Your complaining about your specific model is not necessarily relevant to todays conversations about Samsung's BDPs. Maybe you should consider an upgrade to a different player or purcahsing another brand. But why in the world would you, along with others, want to continue to go on about this the way you do. Move on and get happy, my friend.

I bought one too...I read enough good or bad and frankly... getting tired of waiting for Sony...Pioneer...Panasonic to get their act together and release there new players. I hooked it up to my Yammy 663, changed the audio on the Samsung BD-P1500 to Bitstream (Audiophile) and BAM, DTS-HD Master sounded sooooo good watching Rambo, I thought I was in a movie theater. The only thing I am kicking myself for is not buying it at Wal-Mart last week at $348 with $100 gift card.

I just received my BD-P1500. Haven't had a chance to try it yet because I'm out of town. Can anyone recommend a decent mid-range ($500-$600) receiver that will decode the various HD audio formats? Does this player decode any HD formats and send to the receiver via HDMI? Still not sure how all this stuff works, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just bought the BD-P1500 and running it thru my Yammy 663, it sounds fantastic thru DTS-HD Master. I was waiting for Pioneer, Panasonic, Sony to release there Blu-Ray players, but I was tired of waiting and took a chance on Samsung which for now, I'm glad I did. Ditto, to waiting for them to release there new receivers, but the Yamaha 663 cost $349 and it has everything I was looking for.

For our Blu-ray performance tests, we compared the DMP-BD50 with two of its main rivals, the Samsung BD-P1500 and the Sony PlayStation 3. We started off looking at test patterns, with all three players connected to the LG 50PG60, with each input set to its THX picture mode. The first disc we looked at was Silicon Optix's HQV test suite on Blu-ray.
The DMP-BD50 handled all of the Blu-ray test patterns with ease. All of the detail was present in the Video Resolution Loss Test, with none of the strobe-like effects that we noticed on the BD-P1500. The DMP-BD50 also did a commendable job with the two jaggies tests, although we noted that the Sony PlayStation 3 was just a tad better. The main difference we noticed was on the test with three shifting lines and when those lines reversed direction on the DMP-BD50, they tended to "shake" for a second--this behavior wasn't present on the PS3. On the Film Resolution Loss Test, however, the DMP-BD50 handled the slowly panning resolution test pattern perfectly, as well as the slow pan across Raymond James Stadium. We moved from test patterns to actual program material to see how the DMP-BD50 held up with real-world footage. We started off by spot-checking some scenes known to be problematic and expose faulty video processing. First up was chapter 8 of Mission Impossible: III, and the DMP-BD50 showed none of the moire that crops up on some cheaper Blu-ray players. Similarly, it handled the blinds at the beginning of chapter 12 and the limo at the beginning of chapter 16 without any jaggies or moire--just crisp, detailed images. While the DMP-BD50 and PS3 clearly outclassed the BD-P1500 on test patterns, all three players put out essentially identical image quality on M:I:III. We popped in Ghost Rider and looked at the end of chapter 6. The scene ends with the camera panning up and away from an RV and while we sometimes see moire in the grille of the RV, the DMP-BD50 handled it perfectly. We also watched through a few other movies such as I Am Legend and Blade Runner, and flipping between the players yielded virtually no difference. We did notice some differences on Tony Bennett: American Classic, which is an unusual disc because it actually contains 1080i video, while most discs are mastered at 1080p. At the beginning of chapter 7, there's clapperboard and the horizontal lines are a torture test for the video processors. The DMP-BD50 looked substantially better than the BD-P1500, showing less jaggies overall--although still not perfect. Interestingly, these scenes looked best when we output the video in 1080i format, as the LG TV's video processing was superior to both Blu-ray players. We also noticed extra jaggies popping up in a few other scenes on this disc, such as around 33:40, where we noticed jaggies on the batons, and the DMP-BD50 was better again. (Note that we couldn't compare this disc on the PS3, as the PS3 does not deinterlace 1080i material to 1080p.) The main takeaway from these tests is that the differences between these Blu-ray players is slight, but that if you're a videophile the DMP-BD50 is a notch better than the BD-P1500, and just a tiny bit worse than the reference PS3. Also note that if you plan on using these players in 1080p/24 mode, the differences essentially disappear, as we noticed virtually no differences between the players in 1080p at 24 frames per second mode. |

and the PS3 will get even better cuz Sony has announced plans for future firmware that upconverts 1080i to 1080p.

I agree on that. I am not sure if the difference in price between the BD-P1500 and the BD50 with the slight differences make it worth it. Now with the new Sony S350 being priced at $399 or less, I may wait till it comes out and decide between the 1500 and it. I have a S300 now and want to upgrade to it.

I wonder why so many places are having a hard time getting this product. I live in Virginia and ordered mine on the Circuit city website and had the 1500 for almost 2 months now. I have gone to the local stores here and they have them in stock every time I go. I think there may be a bad batch of these out and about anyway. This is my second one. First one kept freezing up, skipping, loss of audio in the first 3-4 days I had it. I have read elsewhere and even on the CC website that other people have had this problem. Hopefully a firmware update will handle this as it is actually a nice player.
