I've never gone out and bought a whole new setup all at once, it's all been upgraded over the last twenty years. I guess the one that most fits is when Jaws was released in DTS on DVD. I got a second DVD player (Toshiba SD-3109, a dual disc player!) since my Sony DVP-S7000 (Second in Western Canada!) was not DTS compatible and I got a Millenium 246 DTS decoder. It was total about $600 for both! (Decoder was $1200 marked down to $600, then again to $300!). Then the decoder didn't recognize the DTS flag from the Toshiba (decoder had issues with certain brands and what internal DTS processor was used, I found out later). Traded the Toshiba for my friend's Pioneer after testing compatibility. Also had to get new 6 channel interconnects, so another $50-60. Was the hassle and cost for one title (a 25 year old title to boot!) worth it? At the time, yes!

For me it was a combo of 2 things:
1) My wife got me a PS3 for Christmas a few years back 2) She got me my first blu rays: The Dark Knight, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Dawn of the Dead (Snyder). It was really The Dark Knight that did it. I wasn't going to watch that movie in blu ray format (my first blu ray ever to own/see) on a crappy 30 inch tube TV. I didn't care so much about the games cause I'm not a gamer really. I went out and bought a 48" Sony Vizio LCD for like $800. The next year the same size/quality TV in LED was $800. So it is what it is I guess, but yeah, basically it was The Dark Knight that introduced me both to blu ray and to HDTV |

I went all digital media about 5 years ago, and had been fine with just an Apple TV. The announcement of the Twin Peaks set pulled me back in.
In May I got a player, and in June upgraded my 32" 720p TV to a 49" 1080 model. I've inadvertently purchased about 70 Blu-ray Discs and about 15 DVDs of items unlikely to be upgraded in the intervening 3 months. I'm certain I'll slow down on the purchasing soon, as I've hit most of my "most wanted" that are in print. I've got about 40 discs in my Amazon wish list currently, but a lot of them are unlikely purchases. The next big thing is to buy a sound setup. My wife and I are looking at the Bose Solo since it is so compact and streamlined. We have rabbits and anything that requires too much wiring is a hassle. |

I have that same model Samsung 1080i model that was mentioned earlier. I'm seriously considering upgrading very soon. I'm tired of it, and I can do better.
Watching Umbrellas of Cherbourg yesterday convinced me. I'm not sure what I'm going to go for though, needs research. |
