Maybe you've got superhuman hearing powers. I'd rank that up there with superhuman smelling as superpowers on my DO NOT WANT list.
There have been about 10,000 threads all over on loud and quiet ps3's, build dates, 15 or 19 bladed fans, etc.

Not flaming, just saying it is an issue for some folks and if you have anything other than a 40gig and its quiet, you are lucky.

Mine was loud enough that I just ran in wall speaker wire through the attic, had an outlet put in the closet and put it in there. Now I can finally watch movies without the fan cranking.

While I don't think this is the case for everyone complaining about noise, imo, it's probably due to environmental differences more than anything else. Sure, I could just be really lucky but both of my 60-gig PS3s are quiet. They were also purchased at different times (bought one around the launch date and the other when the folding@home client was released). Anwyay, I rarely let the ambient temp go above 70 °F though and the airflow is good for both. I also try to keep other heat sources as far away from the PS3s as possible. So far, that combination has worked out well for me.
