I don't know man.....this seems suspect. Is it really possible that EOS Entertainment has re-mastered this movie to be the first to release it? My hunch is that this is an upscale. Again....just a hunch.

Is EOS known to release a lot of upscales? Many films seem to make legitimate Blu-ray debuts in Asian countries, including South Korea. I would think this is an entirely authentic HD presentation. The DVD editions were already mastered in HD but it just hasn't been made available that way to date.

It was made on HD DVD (although not released), so there's an HD master somewhere.

It's mixed Cantonese/Mandarin, like several other Wong films. Both are Chinese languages (or dialects, if you prefer), so "Chinese 5.1" doesn't tell us anything. (One of my frustrations with the DVD and BD specs is that they don't distinguish between different types of Chinese, so Cantonese and Mandarin audio tracks will both be labeled "Chinese" when cycling through them with the remote.) Anyway there was an all-Mandarin dub produced, but I doubt that's what EOS is using.

the DVD beaver review says that days of being wild has subs that are a little "strange". the US/UK DVDs say "Do you bring girls home often?" and the HK bluray has "do you bring girls home ofently?" stuff like that doesnt bother me much. its not like they are totally wrong.. but some of the DVDs look really awefull .. and are pricy as well (international shipping) if Criterion might ever release one of these movies im gladly gonna double or tripple dip on these ![]() |

And yeah, it's great Criterion has already released 2 WKW movies but they really need to put out some more! Or hell, Kino should just release them on Blu, since they already have done that for two of his movies. |

it looks like most of the previous released wong kar wai movies used the same masters as Mega Star in HK did.. looks like that was the case for years with all DVD and Bluray releases...
i kinda doubt that criterion will add another of his movies. sure they did upgrade in the mood for love over 2 years ago but the last time they did "add" another movie of wong was 2002 ![]() the UK DVD releases are most all pretty bad. some even use only 3,5gig of space on the disc. most of the asian releases look like 240p youtube.. and it looks like there wasnt really much work done in the last 5-6 years since mega star did release 2 of his movies. i kinda doubt that there is real interessted from either criterion/KINO or artifical eye in the UK to add another of his movies to their collection.. just noticed the crazy prices for the KINO DVDs at ebay.. and the even more odd prices for soundtracks and posters of his movies. who knows, maybe we wont see another bluray release for some of these movies for years...and even if "criterion" would do their magic they would have to go back to the original print most likely to improve on the current releases... |

You're right, the only Wong Kar-Wai movies that have gotten two entirely different HD transfers are Chungking Express and Happy Together. For Chungking Express, there's the transfer by Criterion and the (what I call) official transfer which you can find on all the other releases (afaik). And for Happy Together, there's a Japanese BD which has a unique transfer of the Japanese cut, but includes the usual transfer of the normal cut as a bonus.
