I wish the original logo were present, but I like the new one. Jump cut doesn't bother me...they just added a frame in between the two shots to smooth them out. I like the blue look. So, for me, this is the definitive version.

I don't recall the original Karras face morph. I really need to go back and watch the original cut (is it on the 25th Anniversary edition or just the '97 release?)

It's also interesting the evolution of the logos:

Original, 1973:

Version You've Never Seen, 2000

Blu Ray, 2010

The morph looks almost the same to me, only a split frame longer...which it is. Same feel to me though. Original only on the 1997 version.

Going to watch the first in a few days for the first time. Question.

Is the Extended Director's Cut the same as the Version You've Never Seen?

As mentioned the colour changes have been director and DP approved, so can't really argue with that. May not have been the right decision (Star Wars SE anyone?) but you still got to respect it.

But also worth pointing out that it's not just the colour tint which is different in the 97 DVD, it also contains the original Warner logo at the beginning, the jump cutting possession of
[Show spoiler]Father Karras
rather than the CGI morph and a stereo track which should be closer to the original mono (same mix as 79 re-release perhaps?).
The stereo track on the 97 DVD is indeed from the 79 re-release.

They're almost exactly the same. I think the only difference is that the Extended Director's Cut drops a couple of the new effect shots that were added to The Version You've Never Seen.

Bah. I hate Director's Cuts that add effects years after the filming (ET, amongst more obvious others). If only I had the theatrical cut at my disposal.

Thankfully the Extended Cut is less obnoxious than TVYNS (or any of the Spielberg/Lucas film changes). They eliminated some of the CGI insertions from TVYNS but kept the additional footage in its entirety. It is actually my preferred version.

Unfortunately they didn't delete ALL of the added cgi.

I've decided to just buy the 2nd and 3rd films individually. Aside from the fact that I already have the digibook of the original and I don't really like the 4th film(s) - lol - I don't really want another box set clogging up my shelves.

With the advent of the release I went into my files and found original newspaper ads for when THE EXORCIST went into wide release, "at a theater near you"
I now wish I didn't paste the smaller ads on this major multi-page advertisement. But, then again, I was only 12, and about to be 13, and excited.... my brother was taking me for my birthday in June! What a way to enter puberty!
He had seen it when it first opened in November when it was still only playing in NYC at 3 theaters. He came home totally shocked and speechless. I read the book. I'll never forget my mother's words to my brother as we left the house to see the film... "If he gets spooked - YOU TAKE HIM OUT OF THERE!"
Up until that moment I thought I was prepared...

I'm similar. I have the 40th Anniversary Edition of the first film, and I've just ordered EXORCIST III and THE BEGINNING separately. I don't want to be reminded of a world with HERETIC or DOMINION in it, even if the boxed set might have saved me a little money.
