I know the movie will be awesome, but I don't really like what I'm seeing in that specific picture much myself.

I need to see more. I need to see it all in action and in context.

The picture of the Joker is real but the poster itself is fake.

The credits text on the poster is "Batman Begins"

I already posted this in the off-topic forum....

although it might be a better fit in 'general discussion'...but off-topic seems about right ...at least I think..

Indeed. That's going to be an almost impossible act to follow.

something tells me he'll top it when it comes to being scary...

however, this movie will not focus on the Joker as it has several storylines that will likely tie in-together instead of the 1st Batman that just had Batman vs Joker and Bruce Wayne with Vicky Vale...plus a little cross between alter ego's...

this one will have Dent and Joker along with how Batman AND Bruce Wayne relates to them...he'll at least come across Dent.....

then you have his company and how he'll be handling that along with the likeliness of the Scarecrow running loose with that mask tasered to his face....

and then there is Anthony Michael hall who apparently has a big role in this move...but nobody knows who he is playing yet...all we know is that he's a villain..

and then Rachel Dawes and how she factors in....

Forgive me - I'm not a comics expert by any stretch. Why is the Joker's face (more specifically, his cheeks) all torn up and scarred? Was this part of the canon character's past, or just theatrical license to make him look creepier?

I typed up a response, but spoiler tags didn't work. I don't want to ruin it for anyone else so I deleted.

It depends.

Joker has given various explanations for his origin. I don't believe there's ever been a definitive origin given in the comics.

in "The Long Halloween" he even says he prefers his past be 'multiple choice' ahah..

that's the story Nolan told Ledger and whoever else to read so they know where they are headed..

Ok, I'll give it a crack in white. BE WARNED, this is a major possible SPOILER of the movie...
[Show spoiler]It is my understanding that the Joker is making an escape from Batman on some sort of high tension cable or highwire (Like a zipline). Batman decides to cut the cable, and due to the tension, the cable snaps back into the Joker's face. It catches him across the mouth/face, causing the scarring you see in the photo. This does not make him the Joker, he's already the Joker. But this makes his appearance more gruesome.

The Joker obviously becomes pretty upset about this, and sets off on a spree of chaos...in which he also tries to kill Batman. Remember what Gordon said about "escalation" at the end of Begins.

the whole point to The Dark Knight is that things get worse...before they get better...
