I was excited when I heard the news but not sure I will be seeing this in Canada just yet. Hopefully a blu release is around the corner.

Still have yet to see this.

Unfortunately the September date was wrong:

Here is another link that sheds some light on The Wire being broadcast in HD

http://hbowatch.com/the-wire-being-r...-in-hd-by-hbo/

My lady and I are currently doing a Wire marathon. If i have to explain one more time why the're bars on the sides of the pic, I'll pull my hair out.

I'd actually been thinking about running through the series again after years of waiting for a Blu Ray release... Guess I can wait a bit longer

I'm too cheap to pay for HBO but here's another one really hoping this means a future blu-ray release.

Oh hank God, the DVD complete set I had ranged from mediocre to downright awful looking because of compression.

I will definitely be watching and getting the eventual blu release.

If Amazon gets this eventually, I will finally get Prime. Though, I could possibly wait for a BD release, which would seem like the obvious next step for HBO after broadcasting these. They have to know they'd make a lot of money off of that.

I highly doubt it will happen anytime soon.

The distribution/manufacturing costs would be way too expensive for a show that has limited mainstream appeal.

Not to mention the fact that I just bought seasons 2, 4 and 5 on dvd. So I'm not terribly excited about the prospect of having to scrap that set and spend another $150-$200 for the blu-ray box.

...is that wrong?

I wouldn't say the appeal is that limited. It has grown much more since it aired. I'd also say that Breaking Bad probably helped that too, as it's often brought up anytime someone starts naming BB as the greatest show ever, etc..Family Guy even worked it into a bit (see below). Manufacturing and distribution costs really aren't that high, surely not as high as the actual remastering process they're doing now. I don't think they'd even go through that effort if they found it to only have limited appeal.

I guess that's part of what I meant by "manufacturing" costs.

...shows you how little I know about the technical side of the industry.

Wasn't it made specifically for 4:3, and the creator said it's the only way he wants it to be seen?

Honestly kind of surprising to see positive comments about this when it clearly says "CHOP the top and bottom off". OAR for the Win.

Limited? It's widely considered to be the best TV show of all time and has massive appeal all over the world.

I've got the DVDs too, but, come on, I bet you didn't pay full price. I paid around $40 for the whole set, about five years ago. I won't be sorry to scrap them at all. The number of times I've seen it even cheaper since means the revenue stream from the DVD set must have dried up years ago.

Great point! I did not really factor that in. If they were actually chopping off the top and bottom of the images, then I would say just leave it alone. If it's not broke don't fix it. If the first 4 seasons of the greatest show in TV history just happen to be in 4:3 then so be it. But, the info in that article is from a 'friend' of a website reader who happens to work at HBO, so who knows.
