The 4K format will increase the bit depth for each pixel from 8 to 10, meaning that a greater range between bright and dark can be recorded for video that's been produced to take advantage of that.

Currently, "with fireworks or flashbulbs or looking at the sun, you get the level of brightness as with anything else white in the scene," Martin said. "Now we have 100 percent more signal range to capture those highlights to make a visible difference."

Second is a broader range of colors. A new color-recording technology called BT.2020 allows a wider gamut, Martin said.

"The existing 709 color encoding system shows 30-35 percent of the visual color spectrum," Martin said. BT.2020 can "render about 70-80 percent. As TVs migrate you'll be able to detect those colors," he said. Blu-ray players will be able to detect BT.2020 support and use the better color gamut if it's available, but today's TVs don't yet have the feature, he said.

In regards to ‘finally’, I’m fairly confident that you’re aware but, for the sake of others in the blogosphere, the BDA task force has been working as expeditiously as possible to arrive at a ‘spec’ for 4K BD. Some may not realize the complexity of all the *moving parts* involved, like for instance, development work in HEVC has (and is) still ongoing, e.g. see the HEVC thread in this Tech forum with vargo's post being the last entry.

Same goes for various proposals/solutions for at least some sort of HDR, which we’ve recently re-addressed (BBC solution, upcoming SMPTE recommendations, etc.) in the last several pages of this thread. Trying to tie all these things together as quickly as possible….and, at the same time trying to offer a meaningful upgrade to HD Blu-ray is not a simple task.

I've been waiting for a confirmed timeframe for release! Time to start saving for that new 4k player and TV! Although I might wait a year after launch before laying down the cash just in case there's any early teething problems.

Yes I understand that but the industry has been pushing 4K as it now like it's some magical upgrade over 1080p. Same basic spec we use for HD, 4K LCD's with not that great of a PQ, pseudo players and streaming with no better PQ than bluray. Everything is just a mess. I would have no problem with them waiting until things were finalized.

It's just good to see that a disc format is coming, since that's the best way to view any content, and it will support many new features than just increased resolution.

Why did you have to remind me? 4K bluray viewed on a 4K plasma would of went perfectly together. Just like a woman wearing a sun dress on a summers day.
