In June 2008 we told you that Ridley Scott’s next film would likely be first major Hollywood adaptation of Aldous Huxley’s 1932 classic Brave New World, possibly with Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead.

Over a year later, the project has just now been officially announced and set up at Universal. Scott will produce, and hopes to direct. Dicaprio will produce, and might star. DiCaprio and Scott’s involvement beyond producing depends on the script and the timing of the development, which has has only just begun. According to RiskyBiz, Apocalypto scribe Farhad Safinia has been hired to pen the adaptation, and will begin shortly.

Scott has waited 20 years to get his hands on Brave New World, and now that he has his chance, I would doubt that he is going to do whatever he can to make it happen. Last year he publicly said that he hoped to go into production on World after his Robin Hood project, then titled Nottingham. The book, which was first published in 1932, can be read online for free, or purchased on Amazon for around $10. Here is a description of the plot from the book’s cover:

Quote:
Aldous Huxley’s tour de force, Brave New World is a darkly satiric vision of a “utopian” future—where humans are genetically bred and pharmaceutically anesthetized to passively serve a ruling order. A powerful work of speculative fiction that has enthralled and terrified readers for generations, it remains remarkably relevant to this day as both a warning to be heeded as we head into tomorrow and as thought-provoking, satisfying entertainment. When the novel Brave New World first appeared in 1932, its shocking analysis of a scientific dictatorship seemed a projection into the remote future. Here, in one of the most important and fascinating books of his career, Aldous Huxley uses his tremendous knowledge of human relations to compare the modern-day world with his prophetic fantasy. He scrutinizes threats to humanity, such as overpopulation, propaganda, and chemical persuasion, and explains why we have found it virtually impossible to avoid them. Brave New World Revisited is a trenchant plea that humankind should educate itself for freedom before it is too late.
Many sci-fi stories and films have been influenced by Brave New World over the years, including Demolition Man, which is set in a world based loosely on the one presented in the book. In fact, Sandra Bullock’s character is even named Lenina Huxley, referencing both the author Aldous Huxley and character from the book, Lenina. Scott’s return to sci-fi excites me, and this project is definitely more interesting to me than the Alien prequel that he became attached to last week.
-------------------------------------
I absolutely love Ridley Scott. He's not much for Sci fi and actually dissed the genre recently saying that sci-fi films are as dead as westerns. But apparently he's finally gotten the rights to a book he wanted to adapt 20 years ago (right after Blade Runner).

He's currently finishing up House of Lies and filming Nottingham. He will go directly into this movie next.

source

Ridley Scott:I am going to do one. I waited for a book for 20 years and I have got the book. I am not going to tell you what the book is but that film is going to probably be written within the next month. That will definitely be what I do next after Nottingham, the Robin Hood film that I am doing now in England.

Blood Meridian is on hold for now. Scott says that if he makes it right Meridian will be an 'X' and he won't tone it down.

It's being reproted that the book Ridley Scott will be adapting will be Brave New World!

Quote:
"Community, Identity, Stability" is the motto of Aldous Huxley's utopian World State. Here everyone consumes daily grams of soma, to fight depression, babies are born in laboratories, and the most popular form of entertainment is a "Feelie," a movie that stimulates the senses of sight, hearing, and touch. Though there is no violence and everyone is provided for, Bernard Marx feels something is missing and senses his relationship with a young women has the potential to be much more than the confines of their existence allow.

That would be a very interesting book to see as a movie. I would only trust that material in the hands of Ridley Scott or McG.

Obviously the McG comment was a joke. Relax people!

Can a movie be a classic before it is made ???

This is perhaps a candidate. having read the linked article RS is absolutely correct with his assessment of current Sci-Fi movies as being weak on story and over reliant on effects. The Craptastic Star wars prequels being a very good example.

Sounds like an interesting prospect, but I won't get too stirred up about it yet. Dystopian films have a polarized tendency; they're either pretty damn good, or awful. Especially when it comes to print adaptations. Still, it's kinda cool to see Scott enter the science fiction arena again.

this is awesome news he is a master or was, but that was a long time ago if hes like any of the former master of films his vision will be out dated and the movie wont fair to well. I dont doubt it will do good money wise because his name is behind the title but im not getting my hopes up for a great movie.

I want to see Solaris on blu-ray, when we going to get that from Fox, one of the best SciFi movies since Alien, and thank goodness we got Sunshine it's a great SciFi too....

Have faith my brother, this is Ridley Scott we are talking about. I know G.I. Jane and White Squall and Thelma and Louise were flops and we should all pretend they don't exist, everything else he has pulled off very nicely...
