You have the choice

(A) $42.99 at Amazon plus cheapest $6.48 shipping = $49.47 / 1.6646 customs f/x rate for Sept = £29.72

If caught by customs you pay 20% VAT on the purchase price plus shipping = £5.94 plus £8 RM Handling Fee; makes Total £43.66

(B) Pay VAT upfront with Amazon, you do this automatically with the expedited middle price shipping option

You have a price of ($42.99 + $9.98 shipping) x 1.2 for VAT using same customs rate / 1.6646; makes £38.19

Note the actual USD rate is now around 1.60 as the pound continues to fall, but rate I quote above is the rate customs use for September.


Therefore pre paying the VAT costs £8 more than the standard shipping option, but saves you £5 compared to if the parcel caught by customs.
